I'm a bit of a defector from Geocaching, as I prefer the walking and navigating to mucking around and searching. I live in Canterbury and spend a fair bit of time out and about in the hills and mountains of the South Island of New Zealand.
My main OpenStreetMap interest is mapping walking, mountain biking, tramping (hiking) routes & tracks; peaks, parks, reserves, wildness and recreational areas rather than urban street mapping.
I'm using:
- Android smartphones are my goto these days for most mapping, using the OSMAnd+, GPS Logger and NZ Topomap apps, but I also use:
- Garmin eTrex 22xmap & Garmin eTrex H - software version 3.10
- GPSBabel - to download & upload waypoints, routes and tracks
- JOSM OpenStreetMap Editor - primary OSM track editor & uploader
- Prune - simple gpx track editor
- Viking - Open source, Linux-based mapping application
GPSBabel Linux Based Bash Scripts
- I have been using Linux for over 20 years and I'm not much of a coder but I have previously written a couple of Linux bash scripts for the Garmin eTrex H and the Holux M-241The scripts use GPSBabel to download & filter track data for uploading to OpenSreetMap and are available for download via Dropbox from here: [1], or email me if you prefer and I'll send them to you directly. Save the "gps_download.tar.gz" file to your computer and extract in /home, installation and usage instructions are in the "README.txt" file
