CCC Hamburg surveillance mapping

Rationale

The CCC Hamburg (Chaos Computer Club Hamburg or short CCCHH) is a local computer club in Hamburg, Germany. A working group within the CCCHH is dealing with surveillance. They approached the local OSM community in Hamburg with the idea to contribute data to OSM that deals with surveillance, mainly surveillance cameras.

The motivation is a better data base for the Surveillance under Surveillance project.

Contact

The main contact person for this activity is System-users-3.svghauke-stieler (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.).

Community Consultation

The local community was contacted, we (OSM Hamburg) had meetings with the CCCHH to discuss and plan the efforts and public announcements for the mapping activity (mailing list and telegram) went out.

Hashtag

We use #ccchh-surveillance (see here for the latest changesets of this activity).

Timeframe

So far the activity is planned for summer 2024 (one meeting to collect data took place on 23th of July).

Tools and Data Sources

We collect data on the ground by surveying the areas. We do so with apps (OsmAnd and GeoNotes were mainly used) and take photos of surveillance cameras and use iD or JOSM to add the data to OSM. Photos of surveillance cameras will be uploaded and tagged on the POIs in OSM but where the photos are uploaded is yet to be determined.

SimpleTaskManager is used to keep track of the regions in Hamburg and to organize the efforts.

Participants

There are two groups of participants: People collecting data on-site and people adding the data to OSM.

Participants collecting data:

There might be more volunteers participating and collecting data, maybe without OSM user account.

Participants contributing to OSM:

Measuring our Success

We don't have a clear goal but to simply add all public surveillance cameras we can find. See below for the results/statistics of this activity.

Training/Instructions

The user System-users-3.svghauke-stieler (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.) is training participants not familiar with OSM. Adding the data also happens together with people, who are familiar with OSM.

Used tags

Optional but useful tags (especially indoors):

  • level=* - The building storey where the camera is (in German "Stockwerk").
  • layer=* - The technical rendering level (see surrounding data for the correct value).

When available:

  • operator=*
  • ref=* - Any number on the camera to identify it.
  • image=* - The full URL to the image of the camera.

Template

camera:mount=wall
camera:type=dome
camera:angle=10
camera:direction=10
check_date=2024-08-19
height=4
level=0
layer=0
man_made=surveillance
operator=HVV
surveillance:type=camera
surveillance:zone=building
surveillance=public

Post-Event Clean Up

There will probably be no clean-up event, since no clean-up will be needed. However, System-users-3.svghauke-stieler (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.) (and maybe others) will probably review the changes at least on a sample basis.

Results

As a result, new nodes of surveillance cameras will be added and wrong/outdated nodes will be updated. Ways or relations will not be added but maybe updated.

The following statistics will document the results according to this query:

Number of surveillance:type=camera nodes within Hamburg, Germany.
