Purpose

This page has been created to bring together all the keys that describe various ways a feature produces something. It has the aim of producing a coherent set of features which could be used to create maps showing areas of the world where:

  1. Raw materials or resources are Mined, Grown, Fished or Reheard
  2. These materials processed into other forms such as parts, materials or power.

Raw Material Tags

Produce

The produce=* tag aims to show a feature's agricultural output produced though a natural process of growing, breeding or fishing. Examples of produce: Timber (from landuse=forest, Oysters (landuse=aquaculture), Plums or Bananas (landuse=orchard).

This tag is commonly used for aquaculture, forestry and animal produce. For crops see crop=* below. For orchards trees=* is more common.

Crop

Trees

Resource

The resource=* tag page gives a detailed explanation of mineral resources and how to tag them. It is meant to describe non-biological outputs like coal or gold rather than biological outputs like corn or salmon.

The presence of this tag alone does not always mean the minerals are being actively mined,. Tags such as man_made=mineshaft and landuse=quarry should be combined to verify that the resource is being produced.

Processing Tags

Product

The product=* aims to show a human manufactured output or product that a feature produces though a process that involves taking produce or resources and converting them into a product of some kind.

A good example of this may be landuse=farmland feature that has a crop=sugarcane which is then the processed in a man_made=works feature to produce the product=sugar . (See Sugar on Wikipedia)

In the case where the product is non tangable i.e. service an alternate tag may be better suited.

Output

The term output term is currently used for power generation in the format of generator:output=*. This term has widespread consensus.

Issues

Crop vs Produce vs Trees

Currently the tag crop=* and produce=* both refer to the biological output of an area. The tag crop=* currently is used for agricultural crops from farmland, meadow, and vineyards and rarely orchards, while produce=* is used mainly used for forestry, aquaculture, livestock and animal produce, and rarely for orchard produce.

A few users have used produce=* for crops as well, but this is less common. For example, the most common crop value of produce=* is rice, used 1300 times, but crop=rice is used over 60,000 times as of mid 2019.

The approved tag trees=* is much more common than either produce=* or crop=* for tagging landuse=orchard. While it does not directly name the produce of an orchard, but the trees, this is generally apparent: trees=rubber produce latex rubber, trees=orange_trees produce oranges.

Resource tag

The resource tag is sometimes used for mineral resources that are not being actively exploited, for example, a disused quarry or mineshaft. Database users should be prepared to check for lifecycle tags such as disused=yes and abandoned=yes, and prefixes such as disused:*=* and abandoned:*=* which imply that the mine or quarry is not in active use.
