A step or stairstep is a small, abrupt change in elevation along a walkway that a pedestrian can easily surmount. A single step in isolation is similar to a kerb (barrier=kerb) but usually a kerb is a longer feature which is parallel to a road or path rather than perpendicular. A flight of steps constitutes a staircase, which is mapped as highway=steps.

How to map

To map an isolated step that is not part of a flight of steps, add a node node along the highway=footway (or highway=path/highway=pedestrian) way and tag it barrier=step.

To map a flight of steps, see highway=steps and step_count=* instead.

If you know the height of a given step, add a height=* tag (in meters, unless otherwise specified). Depending on the height, you can add stroller=limited or stroller=no. You can also add surface=* to indicate, for example, that the step is paved with bricks.
