bus=designated is applied where buses can not only legally access a highway but the object is explicitly designed for them.
bus=yes is used in instances where buses can use some infrastructure but isn't dedicated to them (e.g. to exempt them from vehicle=destination or to permit them on bicycle lanes)
Examples
Note that local signage may differ and use prohibitions with exceptions (e.g. "no vehicles except buses") instead of mandates (e.g. "bus only"). The latter case is unambiguous but even the former can be signed with bus=designated.
- physically separated bus bypass lanes - use link version of main highway, tag it with access=no or vehicle=no + bus=designated
- roads to access bus platforms: highway=service (without service=*) + bus=designated + access=no or vehicle=no
- roads into bus terminals: highway=service (without service=*) + bus=designated + access=no or vehicle=no
- bus lanes - note that access is handled here per-lane and not for the highway as a whole. See bus lanes for more details.
Related cases where this tag is not applicable
- highway=busway and highway=bus_guideway (already implied by tags)
- residential roads and higher highway classification where buses are legal - not tagged explicitly as it is obvious (adding vehicle=yes would also be pointless)
- residential roads and higher highway classification with destination only traffic but permit buses. vehicle=destination + bus=designated
- pedestrian roads where buses are legal: highway=pedestrian + bus=yes
- ways into bus depots: highway=service + access=private
Situational cases
Not always is it clear when to use bus=designated or bus=yes. The tagging in these situations require some local knowledge and can be subjective:
- transit malls - for all intends and purposes, these are streets where private car traffic is limited but permit buses and other PT vehicles. Sometimes implemented with signs such as "bus only", other times with "no vehicles except buses" or "pedestrian zone, buses permitted".
