A sewer vent, sewer vent pipe, sewage vent, stink pipe or stench pipe is a chimney often found in the streetscape, made from cast iron. From the bottom, it might look like an old or broken street lamp, and it often has a cage on top to prevent birds from falling in. They are sometimes protected and to be found on a local heritage register.
How to map
Set a node at the location of the sewer vent and add man_made=sewer_vent.
Tags used in combination
NB: The technical names for the parts are pedestal for the base, shaft and crowling/ crown or coronet for the top, but for the sake of accessibility, we'll use the simpler terms.
You might want to add the following tags for micro-mapping:
Tag | Example | Explanation |
---|---|---|
material=* | material=cast_iron | It will be cast iron in most cases. |
manufacturer=* | [name] Foundry | The foundry name can often be found in the cast. |
manufacturer:wikidata=* | If there is a wikidata entry for the foundry. Create one, if there is not. | |
colour=* | colour=green | Add the colour the vent is painted in. |
height=* | Add the height of the vent, if you can determine it. The height seems to depend on the height of the surrounding buildings. | |
wikimedia_commons=* | Add a link to a photograph of this specific sewer pipe on wikimedia commons. | |
mapillary=* | Add a mapillary link to the image which shows the sewer vent. | |
sewer_vent:base:shape=* | cylindrical/ bulbous/ conical |
Describes the shape of the pedestal (base) of the vent. |
sewer_vent:base:fluted=* | yes/ double/ no |
Describes whether the sewer vent pedestal is fluted with one or two flute rows or none. |
sewer_vent:top:shape=* | Describes the shape of the top . | |
sewer_vent:top:decoration=* | Describes the decoration at the top (cowling, crown or coronet) of the sewer vent. | |
bubbleid=* | Links to Bing Streetside imagery. | |
ref:IE:niah=* | Some sewer vents in the Republic of Ireland can be found on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. | |
ref:GB:nhle=* HE_ref=* |
For sewer vents on the register of Historic England. | |
ref:canmore=* | For sewer vents on the National Record of the Historic Environment (UK) canmore.org.uk | |
heritage=* | heritage=yes |
If they are on a heritage database. |
inscription=* | S.D. R.D.C. |
If there is any other inscription which is not the maker's mark. This might refer to the local authority who erected them, in this case possibly "South Dublin Rural District Council". |
