Status: de facto

A section of railway which is no longer used but where the track and infrastructure remain in place. This should be used only for the rails, for other structures like stations use a lifecycle prefix. For example if the top of the rail or rail head is not visible like the example photo, this is disused. If rail is not present at all see railway=abandoned. See Demolished railways#What is sufficient to map a former railway for examples.

This tag is widely accepted, because mapping a disused railway is of wide interest and doesn't conflict much with other mapping. But this tag is part of a larger can of worms around mapping of "disused" things in general. disused=yes is an alternative tagging approach with various problems.

There is some use of disused=tram and disused=railway to mark railway type without using lifestyle prefixes.
