Status: de facto

sidewalk=yes denotes whether a highway=* has got a sidewalk but not at which side.

Usage

On its own, sidewalk=yes shouldn't be used because data consumers can't know where exactly a sidepath exist on a road. It should either be replaced with left, both or right or be suffixed with a direction (compare the current practice with sidewalk=separate).

It's also sometimes used on a highway=footway or highway=path to mark that either is a sidewalk. This is problematic because data consumers have to differentiate between both uses or assume any way with sidewalk=yes has a sidewalk, footway or otherwise. The better supported alternative is to use footway=sidewalk by default and/or the proposed is_sidepath=*.
