A cycle track is separated from the road by curbs, parking lots, grass verges, trees or another physical barrier, but is running parallel to and next to the road.
How to map
Add to a road highway=* the tag cycleway=track.
If there is only one cycle track add:
- cycleway:right=track
- bicycle track only right (direction of the ways of OSM)
- cycleway:left=track
- bicycle track only left
If there is only one cycle track, but it is designated to be used in both directions, add cycleway:right:oneway=no or cycleway:left:oneway=no respectively.
Alternatively, this kind of object may be mapped as a separate way and tagged as highway=cycleway cycleway=sidepath, or as highway=path path=sidepath bicycle=designated.
One-way roads
For cycle tracks that flow in the opposite direction of the traffic, use cycleway:left=track + cycleway:left:oneway=-1 (usually the case in countries with right-hand traffic) respectively cycleway:right=track + cycleway:right:oneway=-1 (for countries with left-hand traffic).
Do not use cycleway=track + highway=cycleway
This combination doesn't make a lot of sense; it implies that the cycleway has an adjacent cycleway=track, which it obviously does not. The reason that there are quite a few of these still around is as a result of an old bug in Potlatch 1[1]. This combination is recommended to be converted into just highway=cycleway by JOSM[2] and iD[3].
Alternatives to mapping using cycleway=track
With cycleway=track, cycle paths are mapped together with the properties of the roads at the line of the road (highway=*) (mapping together). Alternatively, they can be mapped separately as a separate line with highway=cycleway or path (separate mapping). This distinguishes them from cycle lanes, which are always mapped to the line of the road (cycleway=lane). In the case of separately mapped cycle paths, cycleway=separate should be added to the road way, and if the use of the cycle path is compulsory, bicycle=use_sidepath should also be added.
Older tagging schemes
Note that cycleway=track is also often used if there is a track on just one side.
