English version of Israeli maps?
I've seen some discussion of this, but not sure where its up to with OSM. I don't mind the Ivrit labels, and can read them on the maps displayed on my computer, but the street labels display as ????? characters on my Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX
So I'm looking for English street labels, or an Ivrit character set for Garmin devices...
any ideas? apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong place
thanks, David
Fire in northern Israel
I took the image at http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50280000/gif/_50280321_israel_fires_464map.gif and sought Mount Carmel in relation to the recently available high resolution Microsoft Bing imagery . . . unfortunately, the area of the fire appears to fall right between two swaths of coverage and is not, itself, covered. The permalink http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=32.729&lon=35.047&zoom=11&layers=M&relation=1298962 shows this, where Mount Carmel is the center peak. This is just informational . . . I took a look in the hopes I might be able to use the new imagery to update tracing information in the area, but found this instead. Regards --Ceyockey 01:27, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
place_name
Is there a particular reason why there is reference to using the 'place_name' tag? Why won't name=* do just fine? --Gorm (talk) 15:03, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
- This is outdated and de-facto unused. I updated that paragraph and removed the tag. -- SwiftFast (talk) 13:20, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
2008 upload
(Moving this here, it's more of a talk thing than something for the page.)
This is to give a heads up notice, I'm working on converting, polishing and uploading all locations based on the GEOnet Names Server. This is a fairly complete if not exactly accurate data. It does give a full list with English transliterated names of all towns/villages as well as mountain peaks and various other features.
This will create some duplication for places that already exist in OSM but will flesh out place names in our little country. Exact location and merging with existing places can happen later.
If you have objections or ideas it would make sense to raise it now. Contact me through the wiki or OSM at http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Baruch

Upload done!
I started initially to hand check each node and translate it to Hebrew but it was going to take too long. Instead I'm uploading all the data in its raw form and everyone can update the nodes, translate them and place them in their proper location. If you move a node to a place you think is the correct one (you can use the WMS maps for this) remove the accuracy=minutes tag.
JOSM Hebrew translation
Hebrew is #4 on our list of potential future JOSM translations. 2000 core strings must be translated for a new language to be added, there are not a lot missing. We'd love to see the Israeli community complete the translation so we could add this new language to JOSM. See JOSM wiki for details and Launchpad to translate more strings. --Don-vip (talk) 01:35, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Removing "WikiProject" prefix
Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I would like to change the name of the wiki pages related to the Israel mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.
The name of the pages related to the Israel mapping project would be "Israel" (name of place) instead of "Wikiproject Israel", as recommended by the wiki conventions. It is a change that I have already made in United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and all Spanish-speaking countries on this Wiki, consulting with their communities first.
I could make the necessary changes, and also add the Country template to the Israel project page, although this change is optional.
Do you like the idea? Thank you! --Dcapillae (talk) 23:21, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
Armistice Lines, in Jerusalem and Golan
Hi everyone, in recent months the Armistice lines in Jerusalem and the Golan have been removed from the main OSM map (I believe their status was changed from disputed to historic). Was there a discussion anywhere about this? Onceinawhile (talk) 09:45, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Israel community! My name is Chiara from TomTom. I'd like to share 7 MapRoulette challenges with you to help fix quality issues in the map.
We welcome you to try them out and will also work on them ourselves. I've posted them in the OpenStreetMap Israel Forum with some additional information.
