More columns?

This table optimistically only has two columns, but some concepts have more alternatives than that. For example, the table includes memorial=flood_mark and memorial:type=flood_mark, but historic=highwater_mark and high_water_mark=yes are also documented. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 03:07, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I set two columns so the page wouldn't be too wide. I think the page would be unreadable if there were more than 2 columns. If there are more alternatives, I suggest putting them in the second column.

Oops. I put three columns in one row for natural=wood, landuse=forest, landcover=trees by putting nesting a sub-table inside a cell. I think it works, but feel free to reformat. -- Ezekielf (talk) 01:59, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

This is a better format in general. Should be the format for all rows. Tags in the same columns are unrelated to each other. Can describe the feature in the cell first, then put a sub-table for the feature's competing tags. ---- Kovposch (talk) 06:25, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

I refactored the table into multiple smaller ones, and moved the prose out of tables. I also got rid of alphabetic sorting, since I don't find it particularly useful. Duja (talk) 09:45, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Grass?

I have a feeling that landuse=meadow, landuse=grass, natural=grassland, and landcover=grass may be essentially synonyms in practice. Their wiki pages suggest slightly different, nuanced meanings for each, but much like natural=wood, landuse=forest, and landcover=trees there is considerable overlap and most maps don't distinguish between them. Should these tags be included here? I'm not sure if anyone has studied usage patterns enough to say for sure. -- Ezekielf (talk) 02:36, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

I think you are probably correct about urban grass. However, the distinction isn't always so clear in more rural areas. There are grassy areas that get mowed from time to time but are mostly natural. There are natural meadows that are not used for pasture or mowed for hay. There are grassy areas where small sections and paths are neatly mowed but the rest is left natural. -- Ezekielf (talk) 17:30, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

They have the same rendering on OSM Carto, but for me the first three are not the same. landuse=grass - small lawns covered only or mainly with grass; landuse=meadow for meadows and pastures - grass, flowers and weeds, bigger areas. natural=grassland for very big areas grasslands, savannas, steppes and prairies. I wouldn't tag natural=grassland a small lawn on a parking lot. They are of course similar, but not the same. maro21 16:51, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
