- Can you just use landuse=military and specify a type? --DavidDean 04:37, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- that would mean probably deprecating the 'military' top-level tag (we don't really want two sets of tags that do the same thing). that's a big step, if you want to propose it, then go for it. plus, we would still have to discuss/vote on the specific sub-tags to use with it Myfanwy 08:32, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- In effect, that is what this proposal does in a flexible way. On areas: [area] landuse=military, military=<type, e.g. naval_base> or [area] landuse=military [node1] military=barracks [node2] military=bunker ... Or on just nodes: [node] military=<whatever>. I am quite a fan of the concept of reusing the value of a tag as a tag key, i.e. natural=general_thing, thing=<further optional classification of thing>. Oh yes, I support the proposal MikeCollinson 11:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- i see what you're getting at mike, but i've become wary recently of using the landuse tag too much. as far as i can tell, it's intended for marking a big group of properties with common usage, when we don't know the exact details of each property making up the area; residential is a good use of it. when we know what each entity is (such as Plymouth Naval Base, for example), i'm not so sure it fits well. Definition too restrictive?
Not all naval bases will have docked warships or naval ships. Indeed, not all naval bases are even near water. At least with the Royal Navy, there are numerous shore bases that are still classed as naval bases (e.g. HMS Sultan, HMS Collingwood). --Casey boy (talk) 13:31, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
