I was looking on their website for the price information for fuel at the nearest (to me) Flying J truck stop, and found this...

On their 'locations' page is a link to the GPS coordinates of their stations in CSV format, as well as a CSV file listing station amenities.

If anyone wants to hack a script...

Regarding the use of ref tags (nat_ref, loc_ref, etc) from the main page, my understanding (and most logical use) of those types of tags would be in the example where you've got a highway or state road or something that when it goes through a town, is referred to by another (or both) names. MS Highway 49 through Guflport, MS is a good example. Highway 49 runs all the way from the coast out the top of the state, I think but in Gulfport, it's alternately referred to as "25th Ave". In that case, I was thinking of tagging the whole highway with "ref=MS State Highway 49" and having the section through Gulfport tagged with an additional tag "loc_ref=25th Ave". Make sense?

That would be "name=25th Ave", "ref=US:MS 49" for that section. You'd use "ref=US:MS 49" for the entire highway, and optionally add "name=MS State Highway 49" if there's no other name. --SiliconFiend 13:41, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Wisconsin long line segments

Would the person who maps Wisconsin (Stevens Point and other places) please not draw so long line segments. -- User:LA2 23:47, 17 April 2006

Nassau county TIGER data

All of Nassau, County, New York (Long Island) isn't mapped at all, but the rest of Long Island is. -- unknown user

Nassau County was left out of the TIGER import by request, probably due to prior mapping activity (to avoid the editing mess with duplicate roads). If you want to take ownership of cleaning up the data before or after the import, contact User:DaveHansen to get it uploaded. Then remove this note...

Interstate and US Route highway signs

Can we use the familiar highway signs in OSM? Road signs in the United States

Even if we don't have the signs, is there a good way to tag them? We could have different kinds of ref to indicate different kinds of highways, but nat_ref, reg_ref, loc_ref don't map well onto Interstate, US, State, County highways. A square with "I-80" or "CA 20" just looks wrong and takes up too much space compared with just having the number, but just putting the number in the ref loses information.

Metric

The Brits seem to be using imperial measurements for speed limits, by postfixing mph to the speed. It seems that would be appropriate for the US, as well. --Liber 02:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Better definition of US road class

The discriptions are a little hazy and many defining road class in the US. My sugestion would be to go with a road classification that can work anywhere in the US. Lets talk about this and come to a concensus of how roads should be classified.

  • Here is my sugestion...
  • Residential, Unclassified = Minor Roads
  • Service = Ally, Drivway, Parking_aisle, Other service

Gigantic Way

In my edits to greater los angeles, fixing up TIGER and what not, I have come across many administrative boundary. Most have been no issue to update / cleanup, but the city limits for the city of loa angeles contains some 4,000 waypoints. and any modification in an attempt to reduce those points errors out. stating that only 2,000 points are supported. Does anyone have any idea how i can go about reducing the number of points on this way and still be able to uploaded my changes? --Jerjozwik 20:29, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Hoping to reduce inconsistencies in road tagging guidance

I'm hoping to be able to improve United States roads tagging and other pages to remove any inconsistencies. I gess this means first finding them, then probably some sort of vote on whether to go one way, another way, or allow either at the whim of the individual mapper. Would anyone be interested in helping? Or will I get silence, end up changing the pages myself, and get reverted? :) --NE2 06:26, 3 February 2010 (UTC)


Parks

Does anyone have any recommendations for classifying parks based on administration level? Such as national parks vs. state parks? I am working on Lake Somerville, Texas and there are 'Texas Parks and Wildlife' Parks (state parks) and US Army Corp of Engineers Parks as well as privately run parks that lease the land from the Corp of Engineers. I've looked and can't find any defined way to seperatly classify National Parks, State Parks, County Parks and so on.

Also, I've found some info on tags for camp sites (tourism:camp_site), but what about amenities? I would like to add individual camp sites, but some have no ammenities, some have water, electric, RV hookups (tourism:caravan_site), picknick tables, covered picknick tables, BBQ pits and so on. Has anyone done any work on parks? Do we need to suggest some new tags for camp site amenities and park types? --Xsintrik 03:12, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

I assume you've tried the search to the left. You might want to look for an area that's been mapped and copy the method used there. You might also have luck asking at http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewforum.php?id=10 . --NE2 06:42, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

US Bridges

The Federal Highway Administration has a lot of data points on every single bridge in the US. I am wondering if it would be useful to import some or all of the data. I also don't have the skills to do an import into OSM, so I would need some help. See [1] for the most recent data. This will help confirm and update max weight and max height(both for the bridge and under the bridge). We might be able to get some more useful data points out as well. Addresses in unincorporated areas and other such discussion

I just wanted to start a discussion on how to tag addresses, (specifically, addr:city=*) in areas not incorporated into cities, in my particular case, in rural, unincorporated Wood County in East Texas. My thought is to simply use the postal address, since that's what Google Maps and most other such services seem to do, but I'd like to hear some other opinions. Removing "WikiProject" prefix

Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I would like to change the name of the wiki pages related to the United States mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.

The name of the pages related to the United States mapping project would be "United States" (name of place) instead of "Wikiproject United States", as recommended by the wiki conventions. It is a change that I have already made in Argentina, Spain, Colombia and all Spanish-speaking countries on this Wiki, consulting with their communities beforehand. Hard work but good results.

I could make the necessary changes, no problem, and also add the Country template to the United States project page, although this change is optional.

Several subpages would be affected, but their authors may not be watching this talk page. So perhaps you could post to the talk-us mailing list or OSMUS Slack to keep them in the loop. But I personally see no problem with moving the pages. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:10, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for doing this. Most of the changes look great. I renamed United States Numbered Highway System and United States Bicycle Route System because those are the actual names of the systems; the pages don't cover other numbered routes or bike routes in the U.S. I'm not sure if it should be a strict goal to get all U.S.-related pages under the United States basename. There are lots of other pages that don't even have "United States" in the title, but that's what Category:United States is for. It does make sense to move most of the pages because they need the "United States/" prefix to avoid collisions with other countries' pages. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 02:57, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
