The abandoned:highway key is used to map former highway=* features that have fallen into serious disrepair and which could only be put back into operation with expensive effort. Such highway features will still have some physical form reflective of their former use visible in the landscape, but may have been repurposed or may be no longer usable.
For disused highway features which might be returned to use without significant repair efforts, see the key disused:highway instead.
How to map
The key abandoned:highway is used with the same values as highway=*, e.g:
- abandoned:highway=primary
- abandoned:highway=residential
- abandoned:highway=track
- abandoned:highway=service
- abandoned:highway=footway
- abandoned:highway=cycleway
- abandoned:highway=bus_stop
If the highway is now used for a different purpose, this can also be tagged. For example, an abandoned primary highway which is now used as a footway may be mapped as a way with the tags abandoned:highway=primary + highway=footway. If a name tag it added it should be the name of the current footway, not the name of the abandoned highway. Former names and references may also be prefixed by abandoned:*=*, e.g.abandoned:ref=* or abandoned:name=*. (Also see old_name=*).
Example
Image | Tags | Description |
---|---|---|
abandoned:highway=unclassified abandoned:ref=A6187 highway=path name=Example Street |
Subsided former turnpike road in Derbyshire, UK, abandoned in the 1970s as a result of a landslide. Still somewhat passable on foot and by bicycle, so it gains a (new, different) highway=* tag, and loses its former reference number. |
