Description
Fares on the Belgian railways use a distance-based system. However, in the 21 largest cities, a zone system applies: several stations are bundled into a single zone, and are considered to be a single point when it comes to fare calculation.
This tag is set on stations that are located within such a zone. The value is the name of the reference city in the local language (e.g. Aalst, Antwerpen, Bruxelles - Brussel, Liège…).
Zones are listed on NMBS/SNCB official website and are printed on railway tickets when a trip starts or ends at a station within such a fare zone: if a passenger wants to travel from Mechelen to Antwerpen-Berchem or Antwerpen-Noorderdekken, it will be the same fare even though the distance is different; the ticket will only mention "Zone Antwerpen". NMBS/SNCB also applies a flat fare system for any trip between two stations inside the same zone.
