OSM Inspector/Views/Public Transport - Railway Infrastructure

The Public Transport – Railway infrastructure view in OSM Inspector showed different types of rails.

This stuff is experimental. See User:Oxomoa/Public_transport_schema. More to come.

Overview

This view should help users to map public transport related railway infrastructures as well as railway infrastructures in general according to the enhanced modeling schema described in the proposal mentioned above. The view visualizes map features representing railway infrastructure and helps users to find mapping errors by showing obvious errors and warnings.

Data sources

All data in this view is derived from OSM data.

Layers

On smaller zoom levels, the black Rails layer shows all ways tagged with railway=rail without further distinction, whereas on higher zoom levels, it becomes sub-divided into four different layers:

• the pink Main lines layer shows all ways tagged with railway=rail and usage=main,
• the dark grey Branch lines layer shows all ways tagged with railway=rail and usage=branch,
• the aquamarine Other lines layer shows all ways tagged with railway=rail and usage=industrial, usage=military or usage=tourism and
• the black Tagged without usage layer shows all ways tagged with railway=rail but without usage=*: Thus, it indicates rails which are still lacking of this important information.

The dark green Light rails layer shows all ways tagged with railway=light_rail.

The purple Monorails layer shows all ways tagged with railway=monorail. On higher zoom levels, the values of the tag monorail=* for each way (i.e. the type of the monorail) become visible.

The brown Trams layer shows all ways tagged with railway=tram.

The light green Funiculars layer shows all ways tagged with railway=funicular. On higher zoom levels, the names of those funiculars additionally tagged with name=* become visible.

The skin colored Other railways layer shows all ways tagged with railway=abandoned, railway=disused, railway=narrow_gauge or railway=preserved. This layer helps to find the map features still being equipped with those tags: Once they have been identified they should be re-tagged with the appropriate tags according to the enhanced schema. On higher zoom levels, the values of the tag railway=* for each way (i.e. the type names) become visible.

On smaller zoom levels, the blue Subways layer shows all ways tagged with railway=subway and tunnel=* without further distinction, whereas on higher zoom levels, it becomes sub-divided into two different layers:

• the light blue Overground layer shows all ways tagged with railway=subway and tunnel=no and
• the dark blue Underground layer shows all ways tagged with railway=subway and tunnel=yes.

Two layers show Railways on bridges and Railways in tunnels: The former visualizes all ways tagged with railway=* and bridge=yes, the latter all ways tagged with railway=* and tunnel=yes.

On smaller zoom levels, the orange Warnings layer shows all warnings in general as point-like elements without further distinction, whereas on higher zoom levels, it becomes sub-divided into two different layers:

• The light yellow Main lines not electrified layer shows all ways tagged with railway=* and usage=main but without electrified=* or with electrified=no: This could be an error due to the implausibility of such situations in most countries.
• The golden Subways tagged without tunnel layer shows all ways tagged with railway=subway but without tunnel=*: This is not an error but it can lead to problems, especially with rendering.

On smaller zoom levels, the red Warnings layer shows all warnings in general as point-like elements without further distinction, whereas on higher zoom levels, it becomes sub-divided into three different layers:

• The red Railways tagged as highway layer shows all ways tagged with railway=* and highway=* simultaneously: This is always an error because two separate ways shall be created in such situations. Otherwise additional tags (such as ref=* or name=*) cannot be clearly assigned to one of the ways.
• The red Incorrect metro connections layer shows all positions where subways or monorails are passing into other ways tagged with railway=rail, railway=light_rail, railway=tram or railway=funicular. This is always an error: If railways tagged as subways or monorails are passing into other railways, the concerned railways cannot be subways or monorails and have to be changed.
• The dark orange Wrong rail line members layer shows all ways tagged with railway=light_rail, railway=subway, railway=monorail, railway=tram or railway=funicular and being members of relations tagged with line=rail. This is always an error: If one or more rail lines are running over such a railway, the railway itself has to be tagged with railway=rail.

The light grey Stops on railways layer simply visualizes all public transport stops placed on railways and therefore just serves as an orientation guide.
