Proposal
Add more non-motorized pathway types, and sidewalk parts.
Rationale
This allows them to be rendered and queried by consumers with different level of significance.
Connectors
footway=link is defined differently from Proposed features/Tag:footway=link here. virtual=yes will be used. The reason is to allow tagging of physically separated and significant length virtual=no footway=link between parts of a sidewalk. (eg perhaps separated by pillars, landscaping, tunnels, and other structures)
It can be used for linear highway=* needed for routing within an omnidirectional highway=* + area=yes to distinguish them from other physical ways.
Other use case:
- Multiple boarding points for ferry https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=74905
- Car trains?
Other extended uses:
- River continuing in a lake (cf NHD Flowline using
artificial_path

Sidewalk parts
There is no tagging for narrow or not normally used sidewalks.
- Terminology on "carriage-walk" or "service-walk" is conflicting on whether they refer to the perpendicular connection from the roadway to the main sidewalk and house, or the narrow parallel walkway.
- "carriage walk" for the the cross-connection https://www.wfbvillage.gov/DocumentCenter/View/149/Carriage-Walk-PDF
- "carriage walk" for the narrow parallel walkway; "courtesy walk" for the cross-connection https://www.chicago.gov/dam/city/depts/cdot/StreetandSitePlanDesignStandards407.pdf#page=walk
- "catwalk" for the narrow parallel walkway ; "courtesy walk" for the cross-connection https://apps.dot.illinois.gov/eplan/desenv/030912/60P99-009/PLANS/11X17-030912-60P99-009-013-006.pdf
- "catwalk" / "landing step" (for boarding & alighting the vehicle) for the narrow parallel walkway; "courtesy walk" for the cross-connection https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/cdot/sdwlk/general/SCSP_FAQ_2014-05-19.pdf
- Should not be routed along bus stops set aside along the verge (where there may be queues and shelters blocking the way), which may exist isolated on a road without or further separated with the main sidewalk. They are also common on "bypass" or "island" layout of bus stops along highway=cycleway .
(Note: sidewalk=continous is planned to be deprecated in Proposed features/Crosswalk clean-up)
Crossings and sidepaths
highway=path and highway=cycleway will have *=sidepath and *=crossing approved to match highway=footway + footway=*. Similarly for cycleway=separate on roads to sidewalk=separate.
Pedestrian lane
pedestrian_lane=* was previously rejected for not conforming to footway=* and cycleway=*.
