A cycle lane is bicycle infrastructure that is an inherent part of the road, but set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, whilst being separated only by paint or other markings, and without a physical separation from vehicles. Where a physical separation exists either use the cycleway=track tag or create a separate way as highway=cycleway.
cycleway=lane is used to tag two-way streets where there are cycle lanes on both sides of the road, or sometimes for one-way streets where there is only a lane operating in the direction of main traffic flow (clearer tagging of that with left and right suffixes).
How to map
Add to a road highway=* the tag cycleway=lane.
If there is only one cycle lane add:
- cycleway:right=lane
- cycle lane present on the right (direction of the ways of OSM)
- cycleway:left=lane
- cycle lane present on the left
Alternative tagging
StreetComplete, among others, uses an alternative tagging:
If there is cycle lane on both sides add:
or
Some people suggest that such tagging is clearer than cycleway=lane, because many taggings exist where cycleway=lane was used where only one side of road has a cycleway lane.
One-way roads
In many cases one-way road will have a contraflow lane. In such case following tags are useful
- oneway=yes
- oneway:bicycle=no
- cycleway:left=lane for lane on left side of way (typical in countries with right-hand side of traffic if OSM way has direction of car traffic flow) - respectively cycleway:right=lane for countries with left-hand traffic will be typical
- cycleway:left:oneway=-1 / cycleway:right:oneway=-1 (to indicate that the direction of travel on the contra flow lane is in the opposite direction of the OSM way segment)
Buffered cycle lanes
A buffered cycle lane is separated from the car lanes with extra space. This is still tagged as cycleway=lane but with cycleway:buffer=* added. For more specific tagging, the cycleway:left:buffer=*, cycleway:right:buffer=*, or cycleway:both:buffer=* variants can also be used.
Buffered cycle lanes are distinct from protected bike lanes or tracks in that while they have paint buffer, there is no vertical element in that buffer, such as a bollard or concrete.
Use on cycleways themselves
cycleway=lane is sometimes used on highway=cycleway to denote that this kind of cycleway is merely a lane on the road with no physical separation.
This is to be discouraged because such ways have no physical separation and such shouldn't be mapped as such. They instead should be incorporated as part of the carriageway. It also conflicts with the current definition since the main purpose of cycleway=lane is that a way (even a highway=cycleway in that case) has a cycle lane, not that a highway=cycleway is one.
