Having good quality cycleway data allows routing software to choose the way that best suits cyclists. == Dedicated cycling infrastructure == === Cycle lanes === [[Image:Dsc01078_clip.jpg|150px|left]] A '''cycle lane''' is an inherent part of the road itself. It has no physical separation from the other lanes except the painting on the road. Notably, there is no curb between the cycle lane and the road. Cycle lanes are tagged by adding a {{tag|cycleway|lane}} tag to a {{tag|highway}}. Cycle lanes are often not present on both sides of the road, but only on one side. This can be mapped by using the {{tag|cycleway|:=left||lane}} and / or {{tag|cycleway|:=right||lane}} tags instead of just {{tag|cycleway|lane}}. The side is relative to the direction in which the way was drawn in the editor. See [[Forward & backward, left & right]] for details. Cycle lanes of oneway streets are again a bit different as they often allow a cyclist to travel in the opposite direction of the oneway street. For that purpose {{tag|cycleway|opposite_lane}} and {{tag|cycleway|opposite}} can be used. Please have a look at the [[Key:cycleway|cycleway key page]] for further information and many examples of how to correctly tag cycle lanes. {{clear}} === Cycle tracks === [[Image:Copenhagen Style Bike Lane.jpg|150px|left]] A '''cycle track''' is separated from the road by curbs, parking lots, grass verges, trees or another barrier, but is running parallel and next to the road (i.e., closer than a few meters). There are two ways to model cycle tracks. One possibility is to map the cycle track as part of the road. This is done by adding a {{Tag|cycleway|track}} tag to the {{tag|highway}}. The alternative is to draw a separate way next to the road which is tagged as {{tag|highway|cycleway}}. Both methods each have their pros and cons. Notably, adding a single tag to an existing way takes less time and still often describes the cycle track accurately, while a separately tagged cycle way is generally more flexible and allows to capture more detail. If the cycle track is mapped as part of the road, the side and travel direction of a cycle track can be specified in the same way as for cycle lanes. You can use the tags {{tag|cycleway|:=left||track}}, {{tag|cycleway|:=right||track}} and {{tag|cycleway|opposite_track}} for this purpose. Cycle ways are usually indicated by corresponding signage. Cycle ways are tagged with the {{tag|highway|cycleway}} tag. Add the {{Tag|foot|designated}} or {{Tag|foot|yes}} tag if foot access on a cycleway is allowed. In this case, always also add the {{Tag|segregated}} tag to indicate whether or not there is a separate pedestrian lane present. These kind of roads get more and more common in Europe and are indicated by special traffic signs.
