Projects and organized mapping activities

Project "Participatory mapping in Tajikistan" (February 2021 - January 2022)

This pilot project is supported by the project "Technology Based Adaptation to Climate Change in Rural Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan", implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government and is jointly implemented by Little Earth (Tajikistan) and CartONG (France). You can find more details on the dedicated page: Tajikistan/Participatory mapping in Tajikistan.

iSHAHR Dushanbe Mapathons (July 2018)

In July 2018, students at American Space Dushanbe contributed to the mapping of amenities in Dushanbe, adding over 500 businesses to existing data. The data may already be out of date with many new construction and demolition projects going on in the city; there may also be some duplicates in the data. Please feel free to contribute more up-to-date local knowledge. The mapping was coordinated using EpiCollect5. In addition, students at American Space Dushanbe spent Jan 2018 - July 2018 contributing to building polygons in Dushanbe through a project in the HOT Tasking Manager.

Import of Administrative Boundaries from GADM (October 2013)

In October 2013, import of Province and District boundaries from GADM 2.0 (http://www.gadm.org) into relations has been finished (please see discussion page for pending license issue). They can be quite a bit off, however (5 km in one observed case, but could be more). So if you have local knowledge, a better database or if you find that the shown boundaries reflect the shape of a nearby physical object (e.g. the winding of a river, a ridge), but are besides it, please feel free to adapt. Make sure to document changes in the "source" tag.

Initial mapping of Khorog (July 2012)

A QuickBird image (taken April 20th 2010) had been purchased for the mapping of the town of Khorog. The core of the mapping has taken place between July 28th, 2012 and August 1st, 2012. The mapping has been coordinated through the HOT Tasking Manager.

See the poor coverage before:

and compare it with the detailed coverage on August 2nd, 2012:

The current state can be seen here.

NB: A report from the ICRC (Dec 2012) mentions this mapping exercise: http://www.un-spider.org/sites/default/files/Rebois.pdf

Common tags

The goal of this section is to present the main tags that can be used in the context of Tajikistan. As Tajikistan is still very poorly mapped on OSM, it is important to focus on a few main features (road network and settlements). The list below however is nothing but a suggestion, and no mapper should be prevented from adding any other tag, if he / she feels that sufficient source information is available.

Settlements and villages

Roads, Streets and Paths

Those tables are a subset of Template:Map_Features:highway. Some illustrations are adapted to better depict the situation in Tajikistan.

Roads

Key Value Element Comment Rendering Photo
highway primary way Main asphalted roads linking the cities.

Examples: Pamir Highway, road Dushanbe - Khujand, road Dushanbe - Hissor - Rigar...

Rendering-highway secondary neutral.png Highway primary tj.jpg
highway secondary way To be used for most of the roads that are neither main links nor small tracks. Usually unpaved (or poor and uneven pavement), but accessible to motorized vehicles (not only to 4x4).

Examples: Bartang road, road to Bulunkul, Vanj road, Khorog-Ishkashim-Langar road...

highway track way Rough roads, only accessible to 4x4 vehicles.

Examples: road to Bachor, road to Turumtai-kul from Gunt and from Jawshangoz...

Rendering-highway track.png Highway track tj.jpg
highway residential way Roads which are primarily lined with housing, but which are of a lowest classification than tertiary and which are not living streets.

Examples: small streets in Gulaken, in upper UPD...

Surface

For each street / road / path, the surface can (and, where possible, should) be added

Paved

Key Value Element Comment Photo
surface paved way area A feature that is predominantly paved; i.e., it is covered with paving stones, concrete or bitumen. This value gives only a rough description; use a more precise value if possible.
surface asphalt way area Short for asphalt concrete - mineral aggregate bound by asphalt. Most such features are tagged as paved without specifying exact surface. Surface asphalt.jpg
surface concrete way area Cement based concrete, forming a large surface, typically cast in place and may have predetermined breaking joints. For pre-fabricated plates, please use concrete:plates or concrete:lanes if you know how the concrete is laid out and one of these tags fits. Magallanes, ruta 9, 2.jpg

Unpaved

Key Value Element Comment Photo
surface unpaved way area A feature that is predominantly unsealed (unpaved); i.e., it has a loose covering ranging from compacted stone chippings to earth. Unpaved roads may, in aerial imagery, show evidence of water along their course; in such circumstances, the waterway should not be tagged as a stream, though it might appear as such. This value gives only a rough description; use a more precise value if possible.
surface compacted way area A mixture of larger (e.g., gravel) and smaller (e.g., sand) parts, compacted (e.g., with a roller), so the surface is more stable than loose gravel. Used, for example, for park paths, better tracks, some service ways, … Best sort of ways below paving with asphalt, concrete, paving stones. Sometimes known as water-bound macadam. Mixture and compacting leads to more grip and stability. Compacted forest track no1.jpg
surface gravel way area This tag has very large meaning range. Used for cases ranging from huge gravel pieces like track ballast used as surface, through small pieces of gravel to compacted surface.
surface rock way area Exposed rock or big pieces of rock used to improve path quality. Typically in mountainous areas. Trail in Tatra mountains paved with local rocks.jpg
surface pebblestone way area Pebbles are stones rounded by waves or river flow. Typical size range from 2 to 8 cm. Describing a surface in OSM they are loosely arranged. Like gravel pebbles can be used as a building part of compacted. Dscf1781-800.jpgDscf1829-800.jpgDscf1831-800.jpg
surface ground way area No special surface, the ground itself has marks of human or animal usage. This value gives only a rough description; if possible, use a more precise value such as grass, clay, sand, earth, gravel or pebblestone. Gfp-florida-big-shaols-state-park-forest-trail.jpg
surface dirt way area Probably very similar to ground. Like all this, it is prone to erosion and therefore often uneven. Gravel is sometimes mistakenly called dirt. Some compacted surfaces are sometimes called "dirt" too, please consider the definition of compacted. Transportation in Tanzania Traffic problems.JPG
surface grass way area Grass covered ground. Mostly nice to walk. May turn into surface=dirt or become overgrown and disappear. Grass path on field 20160719.jpg
surface grass_paver way area A sort of permeable paving using regular cell structure, where the voids in this structure enable rainwater to drain into the ground and the structure itself increases the load bearing capability. Often used for parking lots or infrequent used ways like for emergency-vehicles. Dscf1611-800.jpgDscf1614-800.jpg
surface mud way area Similar to ground but most of the year wet which gives a soft ground with low carrying capacity. Mostly found on wetland like swamps or in tidal areas. Sometimes also found on slopes draining onto a way. Dscf1819-800.jpg
surface sand way area Small to very small fractions (less than 2mm) of rock. Dscf0220 600.jpg

Data sources

Currently (June 2021) the Maxar Premium imagery seems to consistently offer the best quality in rural areas of Tajikistan, when compared with the other images that are made available by default in the main OSM editors (Bing, etc.). But please make sure to always check if more recent imagery is available, especially in urban areas, where new buildings and construction sites are appearing everyday.
