Tagging Guidelines
Hiking Trails
All hiking trails should be tagged with highway=footway.
Official Park Hiking Trails
For official park hiking trails, such as the interpretive trails along Highway 60, use the following tags:
- name=* Use the official trail name.
- foot=designated
- bicycle=no
- wheelchair=* Some trails are designated as wheelchair accessible. For example, Spruce Bog Trail and Logging Museum Trail
- sac_scale=hiking
- trail_visibility=excellent All of the official trails are well signed.
These tags seem the most sensible from my experience in the area. Feel free to suggest improvements/changes on the Discussion page. Didymops 21:40, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Canoe Routes
Algonquin Provincial Park does not have discrete “canoe routes”. Instead, there is one giant network consisting of over 2000km of inter-connected lakes, portages, streams, and rivers.
The network of possible routes consist of several parts: portages, the path across the lake, stream, or river, and connection points between each.
Portages
A portage is an official route marked by the Park - it may be maintained or unmaintained. A portage must connect to a node on the source to a node on the destination. For example, the start end point must start at a shared node on the shoreline of one lake to a shared node on the stream it connects to.
For a standard portage, use the following tags:
- highway=footway
- canoe=portage
- length=* Optional, length of trail segment in OpenStreetMap
- surface=* Optional, if known
- source=* Optional, useful for assessing quality. Examples include: imagery, GPS, Strava Heatmap
Portage put-in
If the portage starts or ends at a waterbody, stream, or river, the start/end nodes must have a tag signifying that the node is where the canoe is taken out or put back into the water. It's similar to marking a trail head.
Indicating routes through water bodies and watercourses
To be finalized.
Waterways in the Park are described using two methods.
- Streams and small rivers are described by a Way, usually with a Name. These are usable for navigation.
- Lakes and large rivers are described by a polygon of the shoreline. These are not usable for navigation. Create a new unnamed Way following the approximate path a canoe might take.
Either way, tag it with: canoe=yes.

Part of this trail is shared with The Old Railway Bike Trail and a site survey may be needed to determine which section this is. Also needed is a survey of the trailhead parking lot and its road. It would be nice to be able to mark the staircase that runs up to the lookout point on the south loop of the trail. Didymops 03:03, 9 November 2012 (UTC) |

Official Cycling Trails
There are 2 designated cycling trails along the Highway 60 corridor. The Minnesing Mountain Bike Trail and The Old Railway Bike Trail
Trail Name | Tagged? | GPS Trace? | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Minnesing Mountain Bike Trail | Yes? | Partial | Are the tags appropriate? Parking lot at the trailhead needs to be surveyed as well as the road up to it. Didymops 02:43, 9 November 2012 (UTC) |
Old Railway Bike Trail | Partial | Partial | Are the tags appropriate? Didymops 02:43, 9 November 2012 (UTC) |
Parking Lots
Tag parking lots at trailheads with:
- amenity=parking
- fee=permit
- name=* Use the name of the trail + Parking Lot, e.g., "Whiskey Rapids Trail Parking Lot"
Until there is a survey of the parking lot areas, it might be best to only mark the parking lots with nodes. Didymops 02:15, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Logging Roads
There are a lot of roads in the park used by forestry operations. Public use of these roads is only legal on foot. Any mechanized travel, including bicycle, is illegal. Many of these roads imported from CanVec data are already tagged as highway=footway but others are not.
Imagery
The Bing imagery for this area is not good so most information will need to come from imports or surveys.
Imports
There are various versions of CanVec data imported in the area. In some areas, ways from adjacent import areas are not joined. In other cases, differing versions of data will show streams and other features that start or stop at the edges of these areas.
Source Lake Area
In this area there are hydrologic features from CanVec 10, forest polygons from CanVec 6 and 7, and even polygons with no tags.
