Replacing the SlippyMap extension
There have been some bugs [1][2] with the unmaintained Slippy Map MediaWiki Extension and there was some discussion how we can replace it (see above). I now opened a request to add MultiMaps extension to this wiki to replace it (openstreetmap/chef/pull/241 GitHub). I have outlined how this can be done using a bot at page User:TigerfellBot.
This is a pre-notification (because noting is installed yet). I plan to follow the steps of Automated Edits code of conduct, but in case someone has a question or objection, you can already raise it here. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 10:33, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- Can you please post a link to some wiki page with a map shown by this new extension? --Hufkratzer (talk) 11:09, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- http://fr.nvcwiki.com/index.php/NVCwiki:Mise_%C3%A0_jour_en_cours Outlines the possibilities of this extension, we will be using OpenStreetMap only.
- http://www.jerezsiempre.com/index.php/Capilla_Santa_Gema_Galgani Short page with pictures and a map only.
- Basically, you just place a Leaflet box with a map on the page. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 17:27, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- The last map on page http://fr.nvcwiki.com/index.php/NVCwiki:Mise_à_jour_en_cours contains a layer switcher. Is this also availabe in the OSM wiki? How? I couldn't find that in Extension:MultiMaps/Documentation --Hufkratzer (talk) 10:03, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
- This map does not use Leaflet, but some Yandex framework. There will be no layer switcher as of now, but you can select from two different tile providers (OSM standard and Thunderforest transport) by using the
service
parameter. This is similar to Slippy Map MediaWiki Extension. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 19:02, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Update: The extension is available for about two months now, but there is a problem with the transportation layer. We are running version 0.7.2 which can not display them, because the never version 0.7.3 which can was not tested on MediaWiki 1.31 (current (LTS) version of this wiki). Since the whole backporting process has stalled about three weeks ago, I guess we will be waiting for version 1.34 of MediaWiki. This version will be probably compatible with 0.7.3 of MultiMaps. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 11:21, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
Update 2: The changes were backported yesterday, so the transport maps are available as of now.
--Tigerfell (Let's talk) 12:54, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
I would like to start replacing the SlippyMap extension automatically using my account TigerfellBot. You can find the more details on the user page. I also created a new test version of Template:Place at User:Tigerfell/Sandbox. If you would like to test it, you can use Special:ExpandTemplates. In case of questions or concerns, please speak up now. Otherwise, I would execute my plans no earlier than in two weeks from now. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 12:16, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
Removing "WikiProject" prefix
Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I am renaming the wiki pages related to country mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.
I have already renamed the United States, Canada, Spain, and all Spanish-speaking countries mapping project pages. I am in contact with the communities in Australia and New Zealand to find out if you would like to rename their country pages as well.
If anyone wants to collaborate, you're very welcome! We need volunteers. (I recommend contacting the local communities first to avoid unnecessary discussions.)
Thank you! --Dcapillae (talk) 21:34, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- I am currently in a loose contact with the mappers from Bangladesh. As it turns out now, they are confused by the prefix and want to restructure the country-specific pages. (Not sure if they just consider doing something of if they have a clear mission.) --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 09:47, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
Map data in the wiki
How could you read element data (coordinates, membership, tags) from the map and use or display it in the wiki? --Andrew (talk) 13:58, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Usually you format examples manually. For example {{tag|highway|motorway}} is displayed as highway=motorway Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:58, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
I think this discussion should have a link in the left menu. WDYT?--PangoSE (talk) 09:07, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- Any objections if I would add this? --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 21:53, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Statistics?
Hi, I would like to see some statistics on how the wiki is used. Are there any available? E.g. I would like to know how many different people/computers ever changed the wiki, number of total users, number of active users, etc.--09:10, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- The first question is pretty tricky, because it is difficult to map user accounts to computers or people, but for the rest there is Special:Statistics. Some visualization can be found in https://wikiapiary.com/wiki/OpenStreetMap_Wiki as well. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 10:31, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Where can I propose properties for the wikibase items?
@Yurik:--PangoSE (talk) 13:15, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- @PangoSE: The talk page of the Data items has worked pretty well for now (due to low volume). We are nowhere near the user base of Wikidata :) --Yurik (talk) 17:56, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Current requests for configuration changes
During the last three days, three requests for configuration changes of the wiki were made. This is a summary, in case someone interested does not watch the repositories.
- openstreetmap/operations/issues/351 GitHub
- requests the activation of the feature mw:Catwatch which lets users track the addition and removal of pages from a specific category.
- openstreetmap/operations/issues/352 GitHub
- suggests to rename the mw:Wikibase instance on wiki.osm.org from "OpenStreetMap Wiki" to avoid confusing texts in the wiki's interface.
- openstreetmap/operations/issues/353 GitHub
- asks to raise the AbuseFilter throttling thresholds, because filter 10 (labelling data items edits) hit the limits.

- Thanks for giving us info here! Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:28, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
Archiving bot
Do we have a bot on this wiki, that can archive talk pages (like on en.Wikipedia (example))? If not, do we have someone willing and able to run one?
- What would be its configuration? Due to lower traffic and different types of discussion sometimes we have discussions that should be archived within days, we have some discussions started 5 years ago, with last comment 2 years ago that should not be archived. At this moment I am often archiving resolved discussions manually and it seems work well (takes less effort than running bot and has better effects) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:25, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Wikibase entry: evidence for preceding deletion?
I've just created landuse=research, but the data item https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Item:Q19947&action=history was already existing in December '19.
How was the data item then created?--Cheeto (talk) 02:53, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi. Possibly the tag already existed on Taginfo. A bot create all significantly used keys and tags, and will continue creating these items when they are detected in the OSM database (Taginfo API) or on the wiki. See Item Creation Process for more details. --Dcapillae (talk) 08:34, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Searching option for all osm-wiki-database changes of one specific day in the past
There is a default menu item Special:RecentChanges to see all recent wiki-database changes. But lets say i want to see all changes from day 2012-04-28 (and 2012-04-29). Is this possible in some way? --MalgiK (talk) 16:42, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
- This information is stored in recentchanges table (MediaWiki manual). Entries will be removed after 90 days by default. If the edits triggered an abuse filter, you could use the abuse log. This example lists all hits of filter 1 between 24 April and 4 May 2014 for instance. The oldest log entry of any abuse filter I can see was on 12 August 2013. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 11:23, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- It is probably possible to download full wiki dump and filter history. But it is not something trivial to do. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:14, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Consequences of novice user making undiscussed template changes
Today, there was an incident with a new user changing commonly used templates without discussion (Template:Ambox for instance) and copying template code from some Wikipedia. As an emergency response, I blocked the user and asked them to comment on their talk page. Jeisenbe already had already left a message there. The user did not respond so far and I undid their changes for now (a white box for delete requests was just to confusing for me).
I am wondering whether we need some measure to prevent such actions or if that is just some issue that happens sometimes. Wikipedia protected many commonly used templates, but I am personally not that keen to monitor many pages for change requests and it would annoy me as an editor to be forced to ask for template changes. Maybe semi-protection or some abuse filter? Is it even necessary? What do you think? --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 23:32, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- I also think the wiki should be editable by any user as much as possible without asking permission. However, I think it's a good idea to use semi-protection or some abuse filter for the most widely used templates or pages that rarely need to be modified. --Dcapillae (talk) 23:44, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! At this moment admin-only edit lock is fortunately not needed but semi protection is a good idea for critical templates Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 23:09, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

- Sorry, that was my fault. I undid my edit. I think I tried to link the German menu bar to the German blog page which is strangely not working. I guess I am doing something wrong there... --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 15:29, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Adding a new tile layer for the wiki map display
I would like to add two new tile layers to the map displays in this wiki. First of all, I would like to add Cycle layer a.k.a. OpenCycleMap which is also available on osm.org. When writing the configuration code to include the MediaWiki extension, I simply forgot it, so now there are only Standard tile layer and Transport Map.
Secondly, I would like to add a style by OSM France https://tile.openstreetmap.fr. The criteria for featured tile layers in the wiki is similar to the ones on the main web page. OSM-FR seems to fulfil all hard criteria. I would like to ask the wiki community if they have any comments on this topic. I have already asked the administrators if they agree (osm-fr/infrastructure/issues/153 GitHub). In February 2020, I opened a pull request (openstreetmap/chef/pull/278 GitHub) before I was made aware that even the addition of a tile layer in the wiki requires a formal request.
If the fellow users approve the suggestion, I would forward it to OWG.
PS: There is also the suggestion to add OSM-FR to the main webpage [3], which is more than what I request. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 11:19, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea if it is doable without too much trouble Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:50, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- Is it also possible to add the Humanitarian (HDM / HOT) layer, or is that already available? --Jeisenbe (talk) 19:36, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
- As I wrote, there are Standard tile layer and Transport map tile layer only. It is possible to add the HOT layer, but as explained in openstreetmap/chef/pull/278#issuecomment-599047558 GitHub I can not really see a use case. Feel free to correct me! It might be easier for the system administrators if there is an equal list of tile layers on the home page and the wiki. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 10:25, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
All featured tile layers are now available using the wiki extension. This includes Humanitarian and excludes OSM-FR. It turned out to be simpler to have one list of featured tile layers. You can find the updated documentation at Wiki:Maps. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 20:50, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Picture / file upload - edit level
It seems there is a certain count of wiki-edits needed to get the option to upload files/pictures, see comment. How many edits a new account needs to perform, after the uploading function is unlocked? --MalgiK (talk) 10:57, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- It is explained at Wiki:Autoconfirmed users and the system configuration is available from https://github.com/openstreetmap/chef/blob/master/cookbooks/mediawiki/templates/default/LocalSettings.php.erb#L248. This has been a bit cryptic on purpose, hoping the missing information would hinder spam bots. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 09:27, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Pages shown as members in translated categories but without language code
Sometimes, especially for <LanguaceCode>:Tag:<key>=<value> pages, a page is inserted automatically in a Group category which lacks the language code (e.g. Category:Negozi instead of Category:IT:Negozi, where "negozi" is the italian word for "shops").
Detailed example:
IT:Tag:shop=clothes which, when visited, is shown to be in group/category Category:IT:Negozi but it's not listed as a member of that page. Instead, it's listed as a member of Category:Negozi which doesn't exist. I have created Category:IT:Shops as a redirect to Category:IT:Negozi and translated to Italian the related labels of the two data items shop and shops.
The same seems to happen for Category:Straßen instead of Category:DE:Straßen but in this case both of them do not exist yet.
--Marcor (talk) 05:33, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- In case the category with the language prefix does not exist Template:ValueDescription assigns a potentially non-existing category without the language prefix. This happened to the German pages. In case of the Italian pages, you created Category:IT:Negozi on 15 September. Afterwards, the wiki pages were updated (either automatically or someone purged them). However, the category index was not updated (I am guessing based on previous problems with this wiki, so if someone knows it, please correct me.). I fixed IT:Tag:shop=clothes and IT:Tag:shop=electrical by doing a null edit. --Tigerfell (Let's talk) 10:49, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response and for fixing the issue with Category:IT:Negozi (Category:Negozi is currently empty); I wasn't aware of the existence of null edits, let alone that even normal users could do them. Today, I've created a category for "Strade" (Highways in Italian) and I fixed the same problem with some null edits. Thanks again! P.S. I think I did some purge requests when trying to figure out what I was doing wrong but as far as I remember it didn't work. --Marcor (talk) 15:41, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

Query on Wikidata tag value in OSM
Hello Everybody,
I am new on this wiki. I work mostly with Wikidata.
My question is : where can I adress a query to find the object in OSM with a specific value on his Wikidata tag?
Example : This object in OSM have the tag wikidata where is indicate the value of the similar Wikidata item Q3330626.
Where can I query this wikidata value, to find by example the OSM object with Wikidata tag value Q85855578?
I know WIWOSM but I don't be able to get back the geographic coorrdinates through this interface.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.--2le2im-bdc (talk) 06:23, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Guideline for tables
There should be some kind of guideline for when and how to use tables. Along with what fields tables should contain. Currently, tables are being created for their own sake. With a lot of fields that serve no purpose and have useless information. Articles with the indiscriminate use of tables don't load well either. Especially if the tables are in templates. For example the cuisine article always either loads extremely slowly or just time outs. Another example is the Tourism tag overview article. It takes a like 5 seconds to load, some of the example rendering icons are broken, and it freezes up when scrolling through it. So, there should be some kind of standards for labels. They don't make information any easier to find if using them just makes articles load slowly, not load at all, freeze, or break. --Adamant1 (talk) 12:44, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Adamant1: Are you still seeing this performance issues with tables specifically? From what I've seen so far, the major contributors to long page load time are numerous Wikimedia Commons images and overly complex templates, but I haven't seen signs that the table syntax slows down page load time, at least not on the server side. That said, large tables are notorious for slowing down page layout time in browsers, particularly Gecko-based browsers. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 23:37, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Meaning of "de facto" versus "in use" for keys
I recently documented the tag related_law=*, and after this subsequent edit, I am confused about the difference between status=de facto and status=in use. The documentation at Template:ValueDescription and Template:KeyDescription says:
- de facto: the tag is in widespread use, but no formal proposal process has taken place
- in use: the feature is in use
I am not sure how to interpret this difference. I was operating under the impression that in use was the "more adopted" descriptor, but apparently I have that backwards. If so, I propose that the description of in use be clarified to say:
- in use: the feature has some use, but it is not widespread, and no formal proposal process has taken place.
--ZeLonewolf (talk) 17:31, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- You are correct that "de facto" is considered to be a sign of a "better" tag, in the sense that it has reached widespread use. The tag "in use" has a very wide range of meaning. It can be a rare tag which has only been used a few times, but which is being continually used by some mappers, or it can be a common tag which has been used thousands of times, but there is another tag that means the same thing. I will change the status to "de facto" for tags which have been used frequently, and when there is no other common tag which means the same thing.
- The suggested text for "in use" won't work, unfortunately, because an "in use" tag could actually have had a proposal which was abandoned or rejected, but they are still being used anyway. And an "in use" tag can be pretty widespread. Unfortunately there isn't a very clear distinction. --Jeisenbe (talk) 18:17, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- If someone made a proposal to adopt a "de facto" tag, and that proposal was defeated with say 70% approval, would that tag still be "de facto"? Or would it change to "in use" or "proposed" or "rejected"? It seems to me that "de facto" is really just describing widespread (in numbers, and in geography) adoption, and "in use" is describing less-than-widespread adoption. And, both of these have not been approved by the proposal process, regardless of the proposal status. I feel that something more is needed to spell out the meaning of "in use", because if I was confused as a native English speaker, surely others will be as well. --ZeLonewolf (talk) 18:31, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Re: "If someone made a proposal to adopt a "de facto" tag..." - I'm unaware of this every happening. It's not necessary to approve tags which are already the "de facto" standard.
- "It seems to me that "de facto" is really just describing widespread (in numbers, and in geography) adoption, and "in use" is describing less-than-widespread adoption." - I would agree with such summary Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:22, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- I just found the page Approval status which apparently explains this, so I'm leaving that link here for future mappers that encounter this discussion. --ZeLonewolf (talk) 22:12, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Right, I forgot about that page. The relevant section (which I wrote a year ago after researching this issue) is: Approval_status#.22In_use.22_status
- "in use status has a wide range of meaning. These tags have not been voted on and discussed like approved features and are not as widely used as de facto tags, but may still be the most common existing tag for a feature. Only a small percentage of in use tags have been added to the list of Map Features.
- "All in use features and attributes are currently being added to new features by mappers, but have not been approved or used so widely to become de facto."
- "Some feature and attribute tags with in use status are fairly widely used, but are too new or not yet common enough to be tagged as de facto. However, they may change to de facto after another year or two of frequent use.
- "Some in use tags are very common, but somewhat debated. There may be another in use tag with a similar meaning, or the tag may be used for several different features with a similar name.
- "Some in use tags may be only used in one country or by a small number of mappers.
- "Some in use tags were rejected when proposed, but are still being used."
- Hopefully that is somewhat helpful. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:17, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, this is helpful and a good summary. I updated the documentation on Template:KeyDescription and Template:ValueDescription to link to that description. --ZeLonewolf (talk) 02:42, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- Resolved: documentation was updated, great! Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:45, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
"European Heritage Label" and "Historic Sites and Monuments in Antarctica"
Hi all, those two Heritage Registration Organisations seems absent from the heritage=* wiki page :
1. European Heritage Label (European commission website)
- potential abreviation : ehl
- potential tags combination :
- heritage:operator=ehl
- ehl:inscription_date=2013
- (it seems they do not have an id to use in ref=* yet?)
2. Historic Sites and Monuments in Antarctica (see latest list)
- potential abreviation : hsma
- potential tags combination :
- heritage:operator=hsma
- ref:hsma=N
- hsma:inscription_date=1995
Both have each less than one hundred entries as of November 2020. Do you think they should be added on the wiki page? If yes, should they be categorized as "international", and which level should be used for heritage=*? -- FoeNyx (talk) 21:43, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- "Do you think they should be added on the wiki page?" it seems to me that answer is yes, but I am not familiar with the topic. Feel free to add them if you know that it would improve the page! In general, documenting used tags is welcomed Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:32, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- "European Heritage Label" - it seems that it would apply to some objects protected by national organizations, not sure how such cases are handled Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:34, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- Isn't that already an eventuality with unesco world heritage? (an overpass query “heritage~/;/” yields several results in this case in Northern Europe; for example : 332352664 332352664); I guess, it would probably works with a third values heritage:operator=whc;ehl;national_org, heritage=1;ehl_level;national_org_level, and then specific tags for each operator like whc:inscription_date=year, ehl:inscription_date=year, national_org:inscription_date=year (...) --FoeNyx (talk) 22:53, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Where can I translate the interface of this Wiki into my language? I mean the menu on the left. My language is Polish and this menu is 50% Polish and 50% English:
pl: Strona główna pl: Mapa en: Map Features en: Contributors pl: Pomoc en: Blogs pl: Sklepik en: Donations en: Wiki discussion pl: Ostatnie zmiany

Creating a page describing key or value
I created initial version of Creating a page describing key or value - review or expansion would be highly welcomed. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:41, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Category:Pages using deprecated source tags
What adds pages to Category:Pages using deprecated source tags? It is not created but filed with hundreds of pages. How to remove page from it? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:57, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Solved mystery thanks to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Pages_using_deprecated_source_tags Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 09:01, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Request deletion of access=use_sidepath
access=use_sidepath exists as a redirect to bicycle=use_sidepath, but use_sidepath should not be used directly with access=* (only with specific modes of transportations such as bicycle=use_sidepath). The existence of that page makes sites like TagInfo mark access=use_sidepath as wiki-documented, which is not desirable. Can it be removed? I created Compulsory use of parallel way to replace it. - Note that "Wiki-documented" does not mean "should be used". Many tags are wiki-documented as deprecated on their own page (for example with explanation and alternatives)- see for example contents of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Tag_descriptions_with_status_%22deprecated%22 Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 19:09, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- In my experience it seems better to have an article for a tag and clearly document it a depreciated if that's the case then not. Especially if it's between documenting that it's depreciated versus having a forward. Since forwards don't loudly tell people that the recommendation is to not use the tag. Plus, with forwards there's always the risk that eventually someone who wants to use tag (or force it on others) will create the article, treat the tag as legitimate, and then edit war etc anyone attempts to say otherwise. In other words, in some cases it's much harder to depreciate a tag after the article is created when it was originally a forward then it is to just skip the forward and document it that way in the first place. Plus, it works better with Taginfo that way also. --Adamant1 (talk) 12:02, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
- I've updated the page to clearly state its status. There was only one way in the database that used it, and that was clearly a tagging error. This should prevent anyone from seeing it as a valid tag/value combination. JeroenHoek (talk) 06:42, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
