On this page, Billboards, information signs and guideposts in Uganda we'll try to make a list of Ugandan signs typically found along official roads, tracks, paths and hiking/cycling routes.
This page is under construction, signs can be added as required in mapping projects. It is intended to help those mappers in Uganda that are new to the project, or those more experienced but looking for a common way to tag signs in the country.
Please note: This is intended as a guide based on what contributors to the page think is best. There may be other equally acceptable alternatives - if so add them to this page with an "or" separator, or discuss first on the discussion page.
Please also note: Some of the tags here may not appear in Map Features and are suggestions instead to cover a requirement. As a result some validator tools may highlight them as errors to be checked.
Terminology
We distinguish, describe and give guidelines on how to map them properly on the following types:
Billboards: for advertising. Might be private or public.
Information: to indicate the name of roads, educational or information signs along roads and on buildings etc...
Guideposts: to indicate the directions to different destinations or names of places or routes.

Sign type | Image | Rendering on OSM / Mapnik | Possible or proposed rendering | Description | Tags |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Public billboard - trunked | not rendered |
Major public billboards located typically along major roads. The advertising content can change often as it is sold or leased by authorities or officially contracted companies to advertisers on a limited time base. It is a grounded advertising billboard, supported by a single trunk (analogy with the trunk of a natural tree, this type of device is also called an "advertising tree"), some lit by transmission, and/or animated with winding posters, multiple sides, installed on public domain along (busy) public roads. Very common type of advertising device. |
They can be represented on a map either by a single node (at the center or located at the support post) or by a way. So the tagging might apply to a node or to a way. Add tagging as described on the wiki page Tag:advertising=billboard.
In Uganda we distinguish the Public billboards from the Private billboards by always adding the tag land_property=public for this type. | ||
Public billboard - wall | not rendered |
Major public billboards located typically along major roads. The advertising content can change often as it is sold or leased by authorities or officially contracted companies to advertisers on a limited time base. It is supported by a wall, or installed as a free standing wall by itself, some lit by transmission, and/or animated with winding posters, one side, installed on public domain along (busy) public roads or mounted on walls of public or private buildings. Very common type of advertising device. |
They can be represented on a map by a way. Add tagging as described on the wiki page Tag:advertising=billboard. |
