Scrollwheel

  • Zooming with scroll-wheel. --Gorm 18:49, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
    • +1 --Cohort 21:52, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
    • -1 (or make it disable-able). Zooming in/out takes a long time, and is something you want fine control over (ie, don't zoom in "approximately" 5 steps). I'd prefer scroll wheel used for something else, and stick with pgup/pgdn or zoom. Stevage 12:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
    • +1 yes is common behaviour in any CAD/GIS... editor --!i! 13:42, 13 October 2010 (BST)
    • This works now -- 14:16, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
  • Zooming with scroll-wheel (revisited)
    • I get the impression that if the scroll wheel is used to zoom in or out by three zoom levels in one go, it stops to load and/or draw all the nodes at the intermediate zoom levels. If that's what it's doing, then it could probably be speeded up ... initially, hide the foreground and zoom only the background (so we can see where the final zoom will be). Then when mouse scrolling has stopped, load the nodes and ways so they only have to be done once. harg 16:22, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Add a white glow outline to the custom edit mouse cursors so that they are better visible e.g. on Yahoo background.--Grille Chompa 19:14, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Rotate ways

support rotating a way by dragging near a control point but not on a control point/way. Beelsebob 17:41, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Keyboard shortcuts

My most important ones: Stevage 12:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

  • 'L' - map pointer's Lat/Long position Molescott 14:56, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
+1 /BennieD 18:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)/
  • 'B' - set selected object's source tag to the current Background. --andygates 21:37, 30 November
That should be in there - see [1] for the tags used. --Richard 23:28, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi Richard, it is, but if you've added a tag in advanced mode which has been completed, you have to reselect the node again and then press b for it to appear. C2r 09:17, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's a separate issue which has been fixed in the latest build (not on osm.org yet) --Richard 11:21, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
  • 'D' - Duplicate selected ways. --SLuGmUfFiN 14:07, 08 December 2010 (UTC)
- this already dims the display of the nodes and ways C2r
  • 'C' - Copy tags from selected node/way. --SLuGmUfFiN 14:07, 08 December 2010 (UTC)
- This is already used to close the changeset. /BennieD 18:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)/
  • 'V' - Paste tags to selected nodes/ways. --SLuGmUfFiN 14:07, 08 December 2010 (UTC)
- This is already used to reverse ways /BennieD 18:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)/
Both are unnecessary. 'R' already does that. --Nop 23:31, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Nop /BennieD 18:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)/
  • 'g' - should load GPS trails C2r
  • 'W' - Merge selected ways. Zippanova 19:37, 7 October 2011 (BST)

More Tools

"Make rectangular" is great, but a tool to rotate the object would be great also. A tool like the blockbuilder in JOSM would also be handy. (Drag a line, drag aside and a rectangular opens.) --Kapege 10:22, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Tool to measure the length of a way (several adjoining ways) -- Tlacuilo 12:20, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Or to measure the distance between 2 points without creating a way. --Sanderd17 18:08, 25 August 2010 (BST)
  • I support this request, if it is not possible a map scale would be better than nothing /BennieD 07:29, 16 January 2011 (UTC)/
  • Or simple show a circle (radius = entered distance) around a selected point. The circle is show as long as there's a point selected and the entered distance >0. This allows to draw ways with a defined distance in any direction. To messure a distance approximative the entered distance has to be varied. -- Wyo 18:08, 4. April 2012

Localisation

What about localization? --Calibrator 09:52, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

    • +1 --bellazambo. Just let us know how to contribute :-) 22:26, 01 December 2010 (UTC)

Editor does not support right to left languages (Hebrew, Arabic). While editing, text is shown left to right (reverse). --adrukh 22:12, 21 October 2010 (BST)

GPS Trails

  • allow point clusters to be displayed instead of actual trails (useful for faster roads with lots of bends where perhaps people are driving with infrequent sample rates. C2r 08:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
  • allow personal coloring options for the tracks:
    • show your trails in a different colour to everyone elses when 'g' is pressed C2r 08:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
    • choose your own color for the tracks Sanderd17 16:30, 9 August 2010 (BST)
    • color by precision: the closer the 1st point is from the second, the darker the line. optional (if it doesn't make potlatch to heavy): if tracks intersect, make it darker. Sanderd17 16:30, 9 August 2010 (BST)
    • color by speed: go from yellow over orange to red (or something like that), the more red the track is, the faster. This would be great to map the speed limits and see what are bicycle- (most of the time 20-30 kph), foot- (almost always 4-8 kph) or motorways (depends on speed limit). Sanderd17 16:30, 9 August 2010 (BST)

Relations

Not sure if these should be potlatch 1.4 bugs, or rather enhancements to the product for v2

  • Sometimes with potlatch 1.4 (edit with save), I've experienced errors when processing very long relations (e.g. European Route E15), perhaps because an interruption in communication somewhere along the line has meant that it has not saved correctly. This means (generally) that either you end up with hundreds of miles of overlapping carriageway, one with the relation and one without, or a long stretch of carriageway with missing relations. Therefore, on committing the change, it should afterwards re-read back from the database what it expects to be there and compare to see if the change was effective, and not allow navigation away from the page until descrepancies are rectified. C2r 08:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
  • When editing such relations live, the situation above happens more frequently, I think if you try, for example, splitting a long related route while it is already committing a previous change to the relations, you end up by breaking the route in a similar way to above. C2r 08:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
  • in potlatch 2.0 relations are shown in the table of the advanced view with the following columns: Relation - ID - Role. When "painting" a landscape with different multipolygons (e.g. forest, meadow, grassland) it would be useful to have some info about the character of a relation in this table, just like ref-tags and name-tags appear in the table and make them easy to identify. Unfortunately name-tags and even ref-tags appear on most of the rendered maps, so should not be used for a note like "ref=grassland near Boscastle". I would find it helpful if the note-tag would appear in the table, in case there's no ref or name to mention.
  • Potlatch 2.0 does not show relation type route=subway for train stations and routes, only route=railway. This resulted in many instances of people adding duplicate rail routes to OpenStreetMap and having to revert a lot of changes. Potlatch 2.0 should also show subway route relations on these cases.
  • In the Potlatch 2 Relation Editor simple version, it would be useful to have the type=route_master, route_master=bus supported in the Transport section. --andypreece

associatedStreet (or street) relations

We need a usefull toolset for this relation type. Usage of this relations will give an ability to create multilanguage address. Instead of addr:street tags on buildings. For example: there is a street with name:ru="Советская улица" and name:uk="Радянська вулиця". What the name I should write to addr:street, if there is a lot of russian-speaking people an a lot of ukrainian speacking people at same place?

So, we need this functions and features:

  • When building is selected, there must be info (even in "simple" mode), that this building is a member of associatedStreet relation
  • There must be info about nearby associatedStreet relations (even in "simple" mode)
  • When building is created or selected, there must be prompt to inlude it to associatedStreet relation (with dropdown list) or create a new associatedStreet relation.
  • There should be a function to easy creating a new associatedStreet relation in two steps: 1)select buildings and street ways, 2) create relation whith automatic copying street name (and name:lang tags) from street ways to relation

tags and automatic set a "house" role for buildings and "street" role for street ways.

  • There should be a functions "show and select all buildings in relation", "show and select all ways in relation", "show and select all members of relation".
  • There should be an editable list of members of relation with member's info: housenumbers for buildings, name tags for street ways. And there should be a button "Zoom to member".

Areas and buildings

  • It would be great if their names could also be shown. --Gkai 09:05, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
And if features drawn in as buildings such as cafes, pubs, etc. This would mean both that the stylesheet provided icons in the map view, and that the map features XML recognised them so you got the appropriate fields for cafe, pub, etc. not for generic buildings. TomChance 13:25, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Warnings

Newbies tend to do desasterous things.

  • One of the worst behaviours is 'simplifying', the process of merging all segments of a road into one, thus ruining all relations, bridges, tunnels, maxspeed, etc. Potlach should warn the user if he is trying to merge differently attributed ways. Advanced users should be given a means to disable the this warning. --BorisC 09:34, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
    • I agree re: warning before merging differently labelled ways (but I disagree re: newbies)--Peace2 07:37, 14 October 2010 (BST)
    • I agree too, it's been a pain to keep an eye on the beginners and fix the same kind of problem over and over again.--Fernando Trebien (talk) 02:20, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
  • A special warning should be issued if the user is trying to merge a segment belonging to a relation with a segment not belonging to the relation. IMHO there should be no way to disable this warning, since this kind of error also happens to experienced users. --BorisC 09:34, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
  • It is far too easy to drag a way accidentally, especially when using the touchpad - there should be a default warning like in P1, with something like "way Dragged, press Z to undo" C2r 08:37, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
  • I'd also suggest a warning when a layer tag is set for areas, especially for building (combination as per taginfo: > 50 ,000 occurrences), landuse (taginfo: > 25,000) and natural (taginfo: > 15,000) G0ldfish 17:28, 7 June 2011 (BST)

Cycle routes

  • The 'Cycle' tab for ways only allows adding a way to cycle route relation, for local unnumbered routes a way for toggling lcn=yes would be nice. --Tko 10:20, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
    • I thought "lcn=yes" was deprecated? Can you explain more? Stevage 06:24, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
      • The documentation makes no mention of "lcn=yes" deprecation, where did you see that? It is preferred for lcn_ref to be used on relations rather than ways, but I don't think tagging ways is deprecated as such. In any case not all routes are numbered so lcn_ref=* doesn't really apply and I'm not aware of preferring relation for "lcn=yes" --Tko 09:14, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Would be nice if the 'Cycle' tab included direct access to cycleway=lane,track,opposite_lane,opposite and bicycle=designated --Tko 10:20, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
    • I have added this just now. Not sure when it will show up for everyone. Would appreciate comments on my implementation. Stevage 06:24, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Loading Ways only

Morten Jagd Christensen In my area of edits every house has a node. When tracing new ways these are often in the way and prohibits zooming out due to clutter of poi's. A loading ways only option (or some other filtering mechanism) could help mapping and give shorter load times. - Keep up the good work with Potlatch - its so easy to work with.

+1 for general filtering. In northern France are all buildings mapped as buildings (so a lot of nodes, connected to ways) but there are almost no streets mapped. Mapping them with all the buildings is hard. Of cource the filtering should happen on the server (and therefore I don't know if filtering is possible), it makes no sense to download all the buildings and filter them out on the PC. Sanderd17 16:42, 9 August 2010 (BST)
+1 for filtering. In my area there has been some extensive mapping of fields which covers up all the countryside and makes mapping of more important details very difficult. It would be great to filter those pointless and obstructive areas away or at least push them in the background. --Nop 06:36, 23 August 2010 (BST)

Minor improvements to saving

I tend to save frequently, and waiting for the save dialog can often comprise a significant portion of my editing. Alexrudd

  • Shift+Enter when entering a comment should sumbit the form.
  • The success dialog should go away without clicking on it.
    • Yes! This "All data uploaded" dialog box requires using the mouse to click "Close".
Please allow "Enter" to close the "All data uploaded" dialog box. Peace2 17:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
  • Holy Cow! Did someone actually just now edit Potlatch 2 to automatically remove this dialog box?!?! Thanks!!! Peace2 17:41, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
  • Glad you like it. :) --Richard 18:24, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
  • The options dialog should be able to be closed by clicking the button again or hitting Esc. It's right next to Save and not too hard to hit accidentally, forcing you to go to the screen center and back.

Arguments for initial bounding box

Potlatch 1 was only able to accept a center/zoomlevel combo to position the initial viewport. This could cause a few problems when it came to automatically generating links to edit an area, what with different window sizes etc and was generally just a bit painful.

Could we also have the option to pass a bbox to the edit view? robert 17:59, 16 August 2010 (BST)

Improved style sheets

There are many tagging schemes that involve a main type and a subtype and they are becoming increasingly popular. An old example is highway=track, tracktype=*. Deducting from the current examples, it is not possible to show these combinations accurately. If you just enter a rule for the subtype, strane combinations will be shown incorrectly.

It would be great to have rules with several tags to match. An example would be the JOSM styles, until this year they allowed only a single tag, now you can specify tag combinations. --Nop 06:30, 23 August 2010 (BST)

Loading GPX tracks

It seems not possible to upload a GPX track from local disk, only from an URL. The main use case for the ordinary user is that he just pulled a GPX track off his GPS and now wants to put it in the background of the editor to draw streets on top of it. It would be great with this main use case was directly supported and handled as easily as possible.

Was this use case left out deliberately? In that case it would be necessary to build it into the web page embedding potlatch and create the necessary API calls to hand a GPX track URL to potlatch when it is called. --Nop 06:34, 23 August 2010 (BST)

A web site isn't able to read a file from the local drive (this would give serious privacy issues). What you want is a more integrated upload procedure, like a "upload GPX track" button in the potlatch window. --Sanderd17 20:50, 23 August 2010 (BST)
Exactly. If there was a call to hand over the server side file to potlatch, my server could take care of the upload. --Nop 07:26, 24 August 2010 (BST)

Do not sort attributes

It seems that the attributes on the tabs are sorted by name automatically. It would be better to display them in the order they appear in the XML so you can design a logical order or groupings. E.g. the current order for addresses is House number - postcode - streetname. Pretty confusing. --Nop 20:28, 23 August 2010 (BST)

This would mean the database should have a changeable order. This isn't possible since it isn't supported in the SQL standard. The OSM database maintainers could ad an order field but this isn't part of potlatch and would make the database a lot bigger without real advantages. --Sanderd17 20:46, 23 August 2010 (BST)
The order should not be taken from the DB but from the order of the features in the XML preset file. --Nop 07:28, 24 August 2010 (BST)

IDs for input categories

It is unfortunate that the categories for input elements are directly shown in the tabs. It would be much better if they just were IDs like the main feauture categories. The current structure makes internationalization very difficult as it mixes logical structure and output text. --Nop 20:02, 25 August 2010 (BST)

Collect tagging alternatives

For some objects there are multiple tagging alternatives in use. Usually, there is a mainstream tagging used by the majority and some minority or obsolete alternatives. (e.g. barrier=gate with obsolete/minority use highway=gate) I would like to define a preset only for the mainstream/preferred tagging. But then the alternatives will be "not recognized". Defining multiple presets for the obsolete tagging will just confuse the user. It would be great to have proxy/link presets that just refers on to another preset. So if someone selects a highway=gate he will be transparently given the barrier=gate preset. --Nop 10:26, 28 August 2010 (BST)

Agreed. I just came across something like this with denomination=church_of_england and denomination=anglican. Trivial examples but there will be plenty of others. So there needs to be a way of specifying that a tag matches without presenting it as an option. Stevage 13:25, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Missed Mapping features

A lot of features were already added. Remind that they have to be important enough so a lot of people might benefit.

  • Physical:Road quality Doesn matter if it's smoothness=* or something else

Show a version or build number

It would be very helpful if there was an easy way to tell the version of P2, or which one of two versions is more current. Especially during development. --Nop 18:07, 29 August 2010 (BST)

Permalink missing

IMO even Potlach should have a Permalink link in the lower right corner. Wyo 21:37, 5 Aug. 2010 (UTC)

Combine simple and advanced view

The simple view would be more useful if one also could see the advanced tags down at the bottom. Frequently it is necessary to combine 'simple' tags with 'advanced' ones (eg, at the moment there's no 'source' field). Flipping back and forth is too much of a pain. Short term fix: make the buttons for flipping back and forth at the top, not bottom. Stevage 12:34, 9 October 2010 (BST)

Agreed. It would be very helpful to see a list of the additional/unknown flags not recognized by the preset. It is easy to overlook them in Simple mode and do faulty tagging. E.g. when you change the object type there might be residual tags. --Nop 18:37, 21 October 2010 (BST)
Agreed. This would really speed things up for me. Daveemtb 08:31, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Better mouse interaction

Potlatch 1.x changes the mouse to a hand cursor when dragging. This should also happen in Potlatch 2. Also, the middle button should work for this effect. --Waldir 07:22, 13 October 2010 (BST)

And make the mouse wheel work for zoom. --Waldir 07:23, 13 October 2010 (BST)

Hotkeys in hints and menus

Hotkey names should be visible in hints and menus, i. e. "Align points (T)" and "Close changeset (C)" for learning them. --Ilis 08:38, 13 October 2010 (BST)

Changeset options in Save dialog

I want to have checkbox "Close changeset" in Save dialog. --Ilis 08:38, 13 October 2010 (BST)

Remember last save comment

The save dialog always comes up with an empty box. This is cumbersome when saving frequently in small steps. P2 should remember the last comment used (in this session) so you can easily reuse it. --Nop 12:14, 13 October 2010 (BST)

Multiselect

I want to select multiple objects (nodes and ways in mix) for moving them simultaneously. --Ilis 10:57, 13 October 2010 (BST)

indication of direction of a way

I just did my first edit with potlatch 2! Great thing! But I am missing the small arrow which indicates the direction of a way (when it is not a oneway street in which case this is obvious). This is important for some tags like "parking:condition:left" / "parking:condition:right". I am quite sure that the arrow is not there, if it is please correct me and tell me where. --ALE! 19:52, 13 October 2010 (BST)

agreed - this is particularly important for circular ways, such as roundabouts, as it is impossible to tell at a glance on the direction of the way, i.e. whether the roundabout goes clockwise or anticlockwise without adding a oneway tag. C2r 08:30, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
It is also extremly important for the direction of flow of water in waterways. --ALE! 12:14, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
this is sourly missed. It is so important that I think we must consider creating a ticket for it? It's even a blocker when you are going in to verify the correctness of directions. You have to add a temp oneway tag to all, and on boundaries that is also rivers, even then you cannot see the arrow/BennieD 18:34, 15 January 2011 (UTC)/

It seems like it has been included now. --ALE! 17:29, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Jumping to another place while editing

Hi, most times I'd like to add multiple POIs...and I remember that there were other ones that are more far away. Ok I can zoom and pan till I reach the area. But this is very time and resource consuming (loading lot of things I just don't want to edit). So what about a searchbar/small mapwindow to jump directly to another edit area? --!i! 11:18, 14 October 2010 (BST)

I Agree, it would also be useful if you could save a location for later return. Like if you're tracing a road and you see a few building in the middle of nowhere, hit, say, 'P' for position and then 'Home' to cycle between saved positions. --knarF 00:31, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Automatically include links to wiki and taginfo

The current plan in map_features.xml seems to be to manually include a link like <help>https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dsteps</help>.

I suggest instead automatically generating these two links:

  • Designated value:
  • Otherwise:

Stevage 00:42, 17 October 2010 (BST)

Leave Feature dropdown open for blank nodes/ways/areas

Rather than showing a closed dropdown with "Unknown" when selecting an object with no tags, I suggest having the dropdown always be open, if possible. That extra mouse click gets annoying over time. Stevage 00:56, 17 October 2010 (BST)

Agreed. Opening the box would also make use more intuitive. --Nop 18:32, 21 October 2010 (BST)

Make joining ways more explicit

Ways are joined by shift-clicking them. It is easy to inadvertantly join ways without noticing, especially since shift-click is used for multiple/range selection in many tools so users will try it. Joining ways improperly destroys tagging and relations. I did quite some damage while getting familiar with P2 (fortunately I noted it and didn't save it).

I suggest to use a more explicit user action for joining two ways so you are less likely to do it by accident. E.g.

  • Select two ways and press J to join them or
  • Select first way, press J to start join mode, the cursor changes and then you select the second way --Nop 19:08, 21 October 2010 (BST)
Fixed. Now ctrl-click to select two ways, then click the Toolbox "merge ways" icon. --Richard 20:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Does not seem to work. I do not know which button it should have been, but most are inactive. --Dittaeva 13:10, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

make relations editor resizable

i think that the relation editor, which opens when double clicking a relation, is to small. it should be bigger or at least be resizeable. if i resize it, PL2 should remember the size i last used when later opening other relations. --Flaimo 10:47, 22 October 2010

highlight relation elements on mouseover

maybe i haven't figured out how it works in PL2, but i miss the feature, that all elements of a relation were highlighted in orange when hovering over the relation name. made it easy to find out if i missed nodes/ways when creating relations for public transport stop areas. --Flaimo 10:51, 22 October 2010

Me too. I use relations a lot, and I find it harder to find the right relation in PL2 than in PL1. --Marnen 20:46, 27 October 2011 (BST)

Allow to filter out landuse areas (and other overlapping features)

In some areas with dense coverage of landuse areas, it has become quite difficult to fix up the road network. Particularly the road connectivity becomes more difficult, as one can not spot if a road is connected to the overlapping landuse area or correctly to the road. Also it becomes difficult to explicitly connect the roads, as it often chooses the landuse instead of the road, as they are overlapping. It would be great to have a two step filter like the one in JOSM, where you can either hide features completely, or more usefully, show them dimmed, but not interact with them making them "part of the background". Presumably similar issues arise if you want to fix up the areas, but keep accidentally selecting roads. Amm 10:10, 28 October 2010 (BST)

Can this "deactivation of clickability" be achieved with stylesheets? I.e. could one create a "Potlatch (landuse disabled)" stylesheet?

Agreed - Being able to flag feature types as "uneditable" or "undisplayed" in map_features.xml (or elsewhere) would be extremely valuable. For instance, if you are editing features near a coastline, you may want the coastline displayed but not editable. Or, in the particular case I'm looking at right now, I have the USGS Quad Boundaries loaded into my OSM database. There will never be a chance that I want to edit these.
This would be especially valuable for creating instances of Potlatch2 setup for collecting specific kinds of data. That is, display other data but the user can only edit/add a small subset of feature types. ebwolf 09:15, 2 November 2010 (MST)
I support this. Very often areas are cluttered with features that I am not interested in and that are keeping me from clicking the items I want to edit. To overcome that problem, I wrote a plugin for JOSM that hides or disables those items. It would be great to achieve the same with P2 style sheets.
Please note that a simple filter like currently used by JOSM is not sufficient. If a feature has both important/interesting tags like e.g. highway and a tag that is supposed to be suppressed, than the feature needs to be shown due to the highway tag, not hidden like in JOSM. --Nop 10:12, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
This is really easy to do - you can just create a stylesheet that doesn't render landuse areas. I'm hoping to add @import support to the MapCSS parser in a future version to make the task of creating stylesheets less arduous. --Richard 10:23, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
That does not quite cut it. Usually, all unknown objects are displayed as some sort of wireframe by a default rule. That is helpful in order not to overlook some unexpected objects and avoid damaging or duplicating them. But it prohibits deliberately leaving out items by omitting rules for them. Disabling (show items, but do not allow setting a focus) is not possible at all. It would be great to have "render directives" that say <hide> or <disable> for turning off unwanted objects in a controlled way.
Btw, I did not create my style by hand, but I added support for the P2 syntax to Map Composer and generated it. So if anybody prefers a graphical UI for designing a map style or needs a corresponding style for multiple applications (currently P2, JOSM, Kosmos, Garmin map), it might be worthwhile to have a look at that tool. --Nop 18:25, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
The "if it's not rendered already, do it as a wireframe" rule is in the MapCSS stylesheets currently used by Potlatch - but you don't have to include that rule, so it's very easy not to show them at all.
I think you can also set 'interactive: no' in the stylesheet to make an object display but not respond to mouse-clicks. But I'd have to check that, I haven't looked at that code for a while. --Richard 19:15, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Specify default imagery and stylesheet

This may be possible (the deploying guide has an option to specify the Yahoo! imagery), but I want to be able to specify a default imagery to show up (e.g. OSM - Mapnik). Similarly, an option to specify the default stylesheet. TomChance 14:36, 30 October 2010 (BST)

Pass object ID in URL

Again, this may be possible but I can't see it documented. In addition to passing lat/lon and a bounding box (see robert's suggestion), it would be handy if we could pass the ID of a node/way to Potlatch 2 in the URL similar to the feature on osm.org. That way you could have an easy button to "edit this feature" that would preselect it when Potlatch 2 opens. TomChance 14:07, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

+1 from us too. https://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/20827179 has an 'edit' link which supplies node=…, so the editing panel for the node ought to open if supplied in the URL and it exists in the area shown. --CycleStreets
CycleStreets now has a POI edit link on its site - click on a bubble at e.g. http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/places/restaurants/ and the link to edit shows node=…. --CycleStreets
It would be good if a URL argument like panel=(Web|…) could also be settable so that the UI switches to the website panel. --CycleStreets

Auto-split way for turn restrictions

I was trying out the awesome turn restriction editor and was wondering why it was only suggesting one of the two ways connected to the turn restriction node until I remembered that I needed to split the way first. Would it be possible to allow to select non-terminating ways too and then automatically split the way at that node? Alternatively, is there a way to inform the user why they can't select the way and that they need to split it first? -- Amm 17:41, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Live Editing

I can't see any mention of it, but is P2 going to get live editing like P1? I personally find it better to not having to worry about computer freeze ups and internet connection drop outs causing you to lose your editing data half way through, plus it's more time efficient. Maybe as an advanced feature enabled in options? Thanks. --Lakeyboy 01:47, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I sincerely hope that P2 is never going to touch live editing. It's the cause for massive damage inadvertantly caused by newcomers and regular users alike. With increasing coverage and complexity of structures in OSM the potential for damage and the effort for recovering from it rises. The old and simple times where live editing was feasible are over - at least in Europe. Everybody using a computer should be capable of pressing the "save" button once in a while - when he feels that he's reached a reasonable state. Please, don't put that horrible live mode into P2 - never ever. --Nop 09:56, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
There are no plans for live editing in P2. If you look at the P1 source code it has to jump through ridiculous amounts of hoops to support it, and this added complexity has probably been the biggest source of P1 bugs over the years. There's plenty we can, and will, do however to make the Save feature in P2 less intrusive (as indeed it is in P1). --Richard 10:26, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Default hires imagery basemap on a geographic area

We have several sources of hires imagery (Yahoo!, soon to be Bing, USGS). In the Philippines we also have some areas hosted in the dev.osm https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Philippines/hires_imagery#Other_imagery_sources . Would be nice if potlatch "know" what hires imagery is available in a specific geographic region. This way newbies can easily access the available imagery other than the default yahoo! in patlach1. Permalink / Coordinates

With Potlatch 1.4 I was able to get a Permalink via right-click on "Map"-Tab (upper left corner) into clipboard to get the coordinates of the current view. Would be nice to have this back (currently there is only "https://www.openstreetmap.org" in the clipboard). PHerison

Tagging multiple objects

Include place name field when editing address of building

When editing a building (multipolygon, if that matters), the address tab only has the following fields: House name, House number, Postcode and Street name. I think it should include place (city/town etc) name as well. Rasher 19:23, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Make right-angled enhancement

The function to make right-angled seems a bit picky. It is also not obvious to the user why it sometimes "does not work" (refuses because the angles are too far from being right angles). Would be nice if the nodes at the angled were highlighted in some way. Rasher 20:57, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Would also be nice if very-non-right-angles were simply ignored. Often a building will be almost all right angles, except for one little 45° angle somewhere. Could the algorithm simply ignore those, and straighten the rest? Stevage 12:34, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Autotag source

If I don't trace a GPS log and use for instance Yahoo as backdrop P2 could autotag all new edits with "source: Yahoo".

No, P2 will never automatically tag edits with a source. Source tagging should be a conscious decision by the user: just because you have a background showing, doesn't mean you're using it for all information (you could be using personal knowledge, for example). For a quick and easy way to apply the source tag for the current background, just press B. --Richard 10:34, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Tanks. I did not know that. // Liftarn

Autofill on Tags

I use a "source" tag that is not one of the standards sources. I am using a local data source. In Potlatch 1, I simply enter that source once, and it appears on the list every time I add a source tag. I don't have to retype it. the same is true for other tags that aren't on the regular list of tags. If we add one once, it should appear every time until we sign off or go to "Edit." Anything to add more autofill is welcome. --Techlady

"Sticking" nodes

Whenever I create a new way, it is difficult to get the editor to "release" at the last node. How does I get it to let go of my cursor and end the way? (And why doesn't this work the same as Potlatch 1, where it is just fine.) --Techlady

Just press enter? Stevage 12:32, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Tweak to "repeat" behaviour

First, thanks for improving the behaviour of "repeat"/clone so far. One further tweak to be more like PL1: Don't update the repeat tags when branching off a way that you otherwise haven't touched. In other words, in this sequence:

  1. Touch way A
  2. Shift-click halfway along way B to insert node X
  3. Shift-click on node X
  4. Click somewhere new, node Y, creating way C
  5. Press "r"

Copy the tags from way A, not way B. It may sound complicated, but it's a very common sequence (for me at least). I'm having to use a workaround of creating all new ways in the middle of nowhere, and then joining them up to other ways.

(Also while I'm at it, steps 2 and 3 above are very slow for me. Maybe it would be a good idea to start drawing a new way by default. Maybe.) Stevage 12:32, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

One-key roundabout

This would be a dream: click a node that's an intersection, press a key, and:

  1. insert a new circular way, using some sensible choice of highway=* tag (ie, the "higher" of the two), also tagged junction=roundabout
  2. join the new way to the old ways
  3. split the old ways twice each, and remove the unneeded bits.

How do you decide how big to make the circle? Dunno. Maybe use the position of the mouse cursor when you press the magic key to decide. Stevage 12:39, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

About the size, it should support a tag like: diam=xx (in meters). This should however also be implemented in the current possibility, tag: roundabout=Yes --LimburgCowboy 19:24, 3 August 2012 (BST)

make a multi-segment roundabout circular

The "make circular" tool only works on a single looped way. Many roundabouts are actually mapped as a chain of segments which, when linked head-to-tail, form a loop. This pattern is often used where route relations cover only part of a roundabout. Can the "make circular" tool be made to work on a multi-way roundabout, either automatically (follow the roundabout=yes tags) or manually (if all component ways are selected together with control-click)? --Csmale 21:42, 8 May 2011 (BST)

Create intersections for two selected ways

"Create parallel way" is not very useful to me without such a feature. In very long ways that spans more than the screen, it is dangerous not to know the complete extend of the new creation, so I would not use it. In short ways it is easier to simply create a new way, than to create a parallel way and then struggle to create all the intersections, which must be done by creating a node at the intersection point, splitting the way at this node, selecting one part of the way and extend it to the intersection point

Hang on. You don't need to do that. Just shift-click one of the ways at the intersection. A node will be inserted in all ways under the cursor.
Alternatively, if there's already a node in one of the ways, select it and press 'J' (for Join). --Richard 17:32, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

... do the same for the other side ... repeat for all junctions.
This tool, together with create parallel way, will also be very useful when creating a grid of ways.
Also when creating a new way that is straight, but have a lot of intersections - selecting the ways (even more than two) and pressing a tool icon to intersect, will make mapping much easier.
I'm thinking a possible solution is to allow "J" to work on ways: it would create junctions at all intersections (possibly with some hardcoded rules like only making junctions between highway=*, and maybe railway=*). I don't know the feasibility of this. Stevage 06:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Ask for action when a way ends too close to another

I've been fixing nodes that are close but not merged for two days and I'm working in a really small city. The problem is that the new volunteers don't know that you must put the last node over the next road for them to be connected and just put them "really close" so it looks like they are connected, but when using a gps, the device doesn't use those intersections for routing because they are not connected.

I think that a solution is to ask if it's a mistake and the junction should be connected or if there is any barrier or blind way, and correct the map using the users answer. If the roads are connected, join them by the nearest point and if they are not connected, then add a barrier at the last node.

I'm fixing the mistakes, but I'm pretty sure I'm making a few new ones because I don't know if some road should stay separated.

Show Background also at higher zooming Levels

It is difficult to make precise polygons(like houses etc.) with, for example the Background layer Bing Maps at their highest zooming level(e.g. in some areas only z=16 or less). So it would be nice to allow also(with filtering etc.), if there doesn't exist any higher resolution background image, zooming into the highest level of the background(You can watch this effect in Bing Maps itself).

+1 for overzoom support. I know this will only give an enlarged but blurrier image but it would make it much easier when you want to place two points only a couple pixels apart at the max zoom level for the imagery. InsertUser 04:51, 2 September 2012 (BST)

Edit raw data before save

When you run into errors, bugs, conflicts, other issues in Potlatch, you just keep hitting your head against an error box, unable to do anything. The "View Data" option taunts you, letting you find the problem, but unable to do anything about it. If only you could edit the XML (well, actually you can, in the textbox) and then submit the fixed XML instead, you could resolve the issue! -- KTyler 09:23, 9 May 2012 (BST)

Handle invalid data and bad objects robustly

The server should be able to ignore invalid elements and accept the good ones. One bug or odd error can toast your entire edit session by making the save data invalid. -- KTyler 09:23, 9 May 2012 (BST)

Add selectable list of all created elements in the current changeset

Provide a means by which you can select map elements (nodes/ways) from a list of them. I.e., you open a dialog, it lists all the current elements in the view or changeset, you click on one from the list, and now that element is selected on the map. Even better, allow multi-select, and get the expected result. -- KTyler 09:23, 9 May 2012 (BST)

Usability: Make it more obvious that next edit will be conflated into same changeset

While the save button and its prompt for a descriptive comment is very obvious, it takes a lot of searching to figure out that subsequent edits are automatically conflated into the previous edit and it description (unless one presses the secret "C" key). This non-obviousness probably generates a lot of "large area changesets" and causes a lot of edits to end up under the wrong description.

While part of this is already suggested (2011, see above), none of the previous mentions focus on the high likelihood of wrong results. I suggest the following changes:

  • The Save dialog should always prompt for a comment, either a new comment or an opportunity to change the comment of the changed changeset (to reflect the additional changes made). This is needed even for users that know about the C key.
  • The Save dialog should have an explicit checkbox "Part of previous changeset", which can be unchecked to close the previous changeset (without adding the current edits to it) and begin a new changeset with the changes now being saved. It would be unchecked and grayed out if this is already the first save in a changeset. Unchecking/checking the box should obviously not take effect until closing the dialog.

Keep the blue line when converting GPX vector files to ways

When I am adding/editing admin boundaries from a local GPX source, I load the GPX as a Vector File and it shows up as a thin blue line. When you alt-click on this line, it is converted to a way. However, this removes the thin blue line from the GPX trace, so the resulting way disappears into the spaghetti of the map. I then have to load the GPX file a second time, to give a highlight to "my" way so I can follow it more easily. Is it possible to change the alt-click so it makes a way *without* removing the blue line? --Csmale 13:19, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Show only recent GPX traces

When roads are realigned, the GPX traces in the database from before the realignment are still shown as well as the post-realignment traces. Could we have the ability to show only "recent" traces, or traces from after a certain date? I think this will have to be based on the date the trace is uploaded and not the date the trace was actually made. Even though, the ability to filter out most of the older traces will significantly reduce the "confusion" on the display. --Csmale 13:19, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Select a chain of ways

Please add feature: quick select a chain of ways, for example whole motorway from A way to B way.

My idea how this can be done: select a way and then press F, which would add to the selection way which starts in the end node of previously selected way. If there are more ways starting in this node nothing would happen to let user manually select next way which was intended to select or user would be asked which one to select.

This would be very useful to modify long section without clicking way by way, for example when maxspeed changed on a longer section of a motorway.

Create a script to categorize added features in the wiki and check them periodically

To make it easier to know which map features need to be added to Potlatch 2, I suggest to add the category "In Potlatch 2" to the wiki pages of features already and newly included in Potlatch 2.
Then, with the Extension:Multi-Category_Search, it will be possible to check quickly which features are not already in Potlatch 2. The categorization of the existing features would need a script.

This categorization process would also return non existing pages for features like man_made:pole, man_made:lookout_tower or man_made:communications_transponder.

The script should also check if all <choice> entries are contained in the <tag> vmatch attribute. man_made:lookout_tower and man_made:communications_transponder are two examples of features not matched by the corresponding vmatch attribute.

That script could be run periodically to check for any errors and categorize newly added features as "In Potlatch 2".

Access-Tags by select the Sign

Select the sign by choise can prevent redundant and wrong access-tags.
Common errors are access=no/destination instead of (motor_)vehicle=no/destination, or access=agriculture instead of motor_vehicle=agriculture. And bicycle=yes stand for the sign "bicycle free/allowed", and not for "suitable for cycling".
It would be nice, if a chiose-tool (instead the access-drop-down-menue) could be implemented into Potlatch 2. A intuitive example is the german Verkehrszeichen Tool. -- MasiMaster (talk) 16:59, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Start a way from a single node

Presently, new ways can only be started from nodes which are part of a way. An obvious instance where a way is needed from a single node is to add an interpolation linking two or more addr:housenumber nodes. But there are probably many others. This can currently be done by adding a dummy node, drawing a way through the other points and then deleting the dummy node. But that is rather tedious when there are a lot of interpolations that need adding.

Easier links to Potlatch from keepright etc

There are two aspects to this:

  • keepright (or another program with similar functionality) needs to be able to append a parameter for node or way ID. This should cause Potlatch to open, skip the help screen and preselect that way or node for editing.
  • keepright etc should be able to add an additional parameter to specify that potlatch should adopt an existing open potlatch window if possible, instead of opening a new window.

harg 13:53, 03 November 2014 (UTC)

Enhancement to Floating Window

  • It would be useful for potlatch to "know" the maximum zoom level for the imagery it is currently displaying, so that it never displays the "empty" icon.
    • Up to the maximum zoom level it should behave as at present.
    • At one above max it could perhaps display the image at its maximum zoom level but magnified 2x.
    • At greater zooms it should auto-lock to the 2x level.
  • In the floating window dropdown, grey out the maps that are unavailable in the area (if possible) and show the maxzoom levels. Follow above rules when selecting a new map image from the dropdown.
  • I'm finding it hard to see the crosshair cursor against dark areas. Possible improvement could be to use a modifier key to cycle between one of several colours (black, yellow, red, cyan) and/or have a colour selector in the window itself.
  • Show an imagery date (at least month and year) in the title bar. The copyright date displayed in the image seems to be this year, regardless of age of the image and is therefore not useful to determine whether recent features are included.

Always show addr:housenumber at higher zoom levels

Currently, potlatch does not display house numbers if the node or way also has a name. This makes it harder to spot and fix out-of-sequence errors due to gps error in parades of shops etc. I think potlatch should be able to always show addr:housenumber when defined at zoom levels of 19 or above. Perhaps where both are tagged it could show them in the form 23: Sea Shell -- the house number will take up very little extra space and will make it easy to ensure that shops are positioned in the correct order.

Pull-through Enhancements

  • When using a background vector file, it can be difficult to alt-click a node in the vector file if there happens to be a way already on the map at or near the same position. Despite using the Alt key (in windows 7 and firefox), selecting the existing way always takes precedence over the intended pull-through node. It becomes particularly difficult if there are several ways close to the pull through node. There is probably no requirement to select existing ways when using Alt. But anyway, when a background vector file is in use, alt-clicking a node from the vector file should always take precedence over selecting nearby ways.
  • Pull through allows more than one vector file to be opened displayed concurrently. But the selection dialogue (in windows, at least) does not currently allow selection of more than one vector file at a time. The windows file picker supports plural files to be selected in one pass (using the shift key) -- it would be useful if potlatch could enable that.
  • In the Load Vector File dialogue, add an option to jump to first node or way. Zoom level 19 would probably be a good default level.
  • If an edit session has to be closed (or crashes) it can be difficult to find where to resume because the nodes that have already been pulled through now look like new ones again. It would therefore be useful at each OSM Save to save the pull-through state and have an option in the Load Vector File dialogue to resume from there. If saving the full state is difficult, then at least save the node or way that was pulled through prior to the last save and jump to it when resume is selected.

Quick tag lookup

In the tag key column of the tagging pane (advanced mode) if uncertain of a tag name or value, be able to type part of the tag name or value, followed by ? eg picnic? and see a dropdown of all relevant tags eg leisure=picnic table; tourism=picnic site. Selection candidates would be determined by a substring match of either tag name or common values, so table? would also include those results. Picking one should set the chosen name and value.

Note: I've specified this be done in the tag key column rather than the value column to avoid complications in fields like fixme, where the value could likely be written as a question.

Change way to node

Should be able to change a way to a node -- like we can change a node to a way.

Requests for additional map features

Please list map features (ie, types of roads, or buildings, or amenities, or whatever) that should be supported below. Provide the tag (eg, man_made=silo) and whether it is missing from the presets (not recognised, not available in drop down boxes), or missing from the renderer (showing up as just a plain black line on the map).

Intersections

As we now have a Traffic Signals dropdown that appears when you chose an intersecting highways node, can this be extended to include level crossings, and possible even Fords (where roads intersect streams/rivers and no bridge is shown). Russ 07:44, 21 Jan 2014 (UTC)

Show Something For Seamark

Potlatch should show some sort of icon for seamark:*=* and replace the "Not recognised" message with something else, even if all it says is something along the lines of "Detailed editing of marine markers is beyond the scope of this editor". I believe that the lack of recognition for these in Potlatch has resulted in the accidental deletion of markers near me as being 'junk data'. Perhaps reuse/fold into the presets for man_made=survey_point/beacon/buoy etc ? InsertUser 21:52, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

leisure=dog_park

Can you please add this preset? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:leisure%3Ddog_park as long with dropdown menu for barrier (fence,wall,etc.). And eventually opening_hours and lit=yes/no. There is also a public domain suggested icon https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Dog_park.png Already in josm presets. Thanks. Giardia 18:20, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

highway=traffic_signals not recognized

In Potlatch 2, when you select a node tagged as a traffic signal, it says "not recognized" in the simple menu, meaning there is no preset for this. You currently have to use the Advanced menu to add a tag for this. Could we please add a preset for this? Thanks, Compdude 21:38, 28 January 2011 (UTC).

Added this for junction nodes. [2] Stevage 04:45, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Living Street

Living street (highway=living_street) is supported in the drop down, but not as a drawing style (it's shown as a thin black line). // Liftarn

shop=car not recognised

The tag shop=car displays the correct icon, but in the left panel it says "Not recognised". // Liftarn

Healthcare

At the moment Hospital and Parmacies have the same symbols, a red cross. I propose to use two different symbols, that people can differenciate if the object is a hospital or a pharmacie. Proposal: As far as I know, the following is an international standard. So the green cross should be added to the list of symbols

  • hospital = red cross
  • pharmacie = green cross

There are icons for Hospital and Pharmacy but nothing else. Would it be possible to add at least Doctor, Dentist, and Clinic; and maybe also Medical Center, and a catch-all MED (with attribute for the type)? frisket 12:36, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Post Office

There is no preset for post office and there is no icon shown for it during editing either. I think it is shown as unrecognised.Daveemtb 08:31, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Shopping Mall

Preset and Icon for Shopping Mall would be useful for my city.manny15:18, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Cuisine pull-down

This needs a lot more entries but should really enable you to enter other free text as well as having the pull down. An example of obviously missing items are (for fast food in UK, anyway!) "fish and chips". There may be other pull down boxes where being able to enter free text would really speed things up.Daveemtb 08:31, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

barrier=entrance icon

I am mapping a barrier=fence (using Potlatch2) and would like to place a node along it: barrier=entrance. I can add it using the Advanced tab (adding "barrier=entrance" manually), but (imho) it would be very nice to have an icon for adding it (and to have it rendered on the map). It would be the Entrance icon under the Barrier group, like Bollard, Gate, Lift Gate, etc. Thanks very much. --Fun60Cx

Better compability for amenity=fuel

P2 should comply to the specified scheme available at Key:fuel for presets and their values. I.e. the Wiki specifies "fuel:diesel=yes" where as P2 enters "diesel=yes" when the user selects diesel from the presets. Also more presets should be added, most importantly HGV_diesel. parking=surface/multi-storey/underground

parking=* is used over 150000 times, but is not part of the "car parking" preset. For bonus points, choose an icon depending on the parking value (e.g. JOSM uses something like this for parking=multi-storey and also has an icon for parking=underground). --Tordanik 09:15, 2 October 2011 (BST)

Cycleway=shared_lane

"cycleway=shared_lane" is listed in the wiki at Key:cycleway, and is used by some routers (OpenTripPlanner, and possibly others), but is not included alongside the other cycleway options in Potlatch's dropdown menu or autocomplete. It would be really useful when mapping bicycle infrastructure, as it is one of the most common types in some areas. Oba510 (talk) 07:51, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
