A stopway is a rectangular surface beyond the end of a runway, which is suitable for use in lieu of the runway, during an aborted takeoff. The surface is prepared to enable it to support an aeroplane, without causing structural damage. They are usually marked with yellow chevrons, and are not part of a runway proper, thus should get a unique tag. These are also known as overrun areas, or blast pads (although, technically, a "blast pad" may not be strong enough to fully support an aeroplane, and merely be a cover to prevent jet blasts from eroding the ground -- but this distinction isn't generally visible on the ground, so we should ignore it).
How to map
Draw a single way along the centreline (middle) of the stopway, from the end of the runway to where the surface stops. Add the aeroway=stopway tag to it. Information on the width of a stopway should be added using the width=* tag (see below).
Tags to use in combination
- width=* refers to the width of the actual stopway surface. These are usually standardized, typical values are 60 m, 45 m, 30 m, 23 m or 18 m. Only use other values in special cases.
- surface=* - to be used to identify the physical makeup of the surface of the stopway, typically: surface=paved or surface=asphalt.
