Spaceports
Feature : Spaceports |
Description |
Describes the fixed physical infrastructure associated with space flight, including spaceports, launchpads, umbilical towers, service structures, and buildings. |

This page gives an overview of mapping aeroway=spaceports, aeroway=launchpads, aeroway=launch_complex facilities, and spaceflight related items in OpenStreetMap.
Most spaceflight launch activity is centered on spaceports; these facilities are tagged with aeroway=spaceport. The most well known examples are large government spaceports included Kennedy Space Center, Guiana Space Center, and Baikonur Cosmodrome.
How to Map
Like most things in OSM, you can start with a node tagged only with aeroway=spaceport and name=*, and add more detail over time. The most common elements are the Tag:aeroway=launchpad, Tag:man_made=tower, taxiways, and sometimes hangars. These are sometimes tied together with a site relation. More tags see aeroway=spaceport.
Item | Tags | Description |
---|---|---|
Spaceport | aeroway=spaceport |
A place from which flight operations take place. Term includes airports, aerodromes, airfields, and landing strips whether government, private, military or otherwise. Spaceports can be drawn as a node, area or a multipolygon. |
Launchpad | aeroway=launchpad surface=* width=* |
The area of an spaceport used for the landing of spacecraft. Common tags may include surface=* and width=*. |
Apron | aeroway=apron surface=* |
Areas were aircraft are parked or are serviced typically at an airport but may apply to a spaceport. Usually named either alphabetically (e.g. "Alpha") or by purpose (e.g. "Cargo Apron"). Common tags include name=* and surface=*.Drawn as an area. |
Hangar | aeroway=hangar |
Buildings where spacecraft and related equipment may be stored or repaired. Implies building=yes. Drawn as an area. |
Grass | landcover=grass |
Areas of grass that aren't part of something else. Combinations of spaceport=*, surface=grass may be more appropriate, but only if the area has a specific function. |
Public Parking | amenity=parking | Many spaceports also include various forms of parking, mapped as areas tagged with amenity=parking. Multistorey Car Parks should be mapped as areas tagged as amenity=parking and parking=multi-storey. Provide an identifier or name using ref=*. |
Service road | highway=service | Mark internal service roads as ways tagged with highway=service. Include access=private if the public are not able to use them. |
Military spaceports
For a military spaceport, military=spaceport can be added and also, if mapped as way, landuse=military. The aeroway=spaceport is primary, however.
Purpose
There’s no method for mapping specific purpose of spaceports. Some may be used for satellite launches, or different types of spacecraft.
Map as node or as way?
Avoid mapping the spaceport as both node and way as this will lead to some applications counting two spaceports. The spaceport itself could be an entire area, but will still have specific components inside that including a launchpad, some buildings, roads, paths, and often railways and towers. It may be best to map the landuse of the area such as a government or military area, mark the spaceport as an area/relation, and mark the specific areas such as launchpad and buildings as a way. The area may also be surrounded by a wall or fence, with gates for entrance locations.
